The Boston Bruins have seen a noticeable slump since their Stanley Cup victory back in 2010-11. Prior to that, they made a number of trades, picks and acquisitions. But what could they have done differently? Despite their roster, most of the picks in the last 15 years have yet to wear a Bruins jersey, or even an NHL jersey for that matter.
Surprisingly, Boston has had utter failure and commitment issues with most of their draft picks in the last 15 years. Since 2000, only 4 picks have been successful in the NHL and only 1 of those still wear a Boston jersey.
2000 Entry Draft, Pick #7: Lars Jonsson
This Swedish defenceman was taken in the Top 10 but because of some contract woes and NHLPA prospect rules, he eventually slipped through their fingers and stayed in Europe.
Post-Pick Picks: Steve Ott (25th), Justin Williams (28th), Niklas Kronwall (29th)
2001 Entry Draft, Pick #19: Shaone Morrisonn
Another first round defenceman, Morrisonn played only 41 games with the Bruins before being traded to Washington for Sergei Gonchar
Post-Pick Picks: Dereck Roy (32nd overall), Michael Cammalleri (49th), Jason Pominville (55th)
2002 Entry Draft, Pick #29: Hannu Toivonen
It’s still somewhat rare to see a goalie be taken in the first round, Toivonen went 12-14-5 with Boston before being traded to St. Louis where he saw his last NHL stint because of his 3.44 GAA and 0.878 Save%.
Post-Pick Picks: Duncan Keith (54th), Jiri Hudler (58th), Johnny Boychuk (61st),
2003 Entry Draft, Pick #21: Mark Stuart
Now with the Winnepeg Jets, Stuart is a big bodied defenceman that plays a very physical game with his body and fists. Despite that, he spent 6 seasons with Boston before being moved.
Post-Pick Picks: Ryan Kesler (23rd), Mike Richards (24th), Corey Perry (28th), Loui Eriksson (33rd), Shea Weber (49th), Corey Crawford (52nd), David Backes (62nd), Jimmy Howard (64th)
2005 Entry Draft, Pick #22: Matt Lashoff
Lashoff played 34 games with Boston, scoring 1 goal and 6 assists before being traded away. He now plays with the Portland Pirates in the AHL.
Post-Pick Picks: T.J. Oshie (24th), Matt Niskanen (28th), James Neal (33rd), Paul Stastny (44th), Kris Letang (62nd), Jonathan Quick (72nd), Keith Yandle (105th)
2006 Entry Draft, Pick #5: Phil Kessel
Despite the Toronto drama surrounding him, Phil Kessel is an elite sniper that Boston saw and was their most successful first round pick since Joe Thornton was drafted first overall in 1997.
Post-Pick Picks: Claude Giroux (22nd), Semyon Varlamov (23rd), Nick Foligno (28th)
2007 Entry Draft; Pick #8: Zach Hamill
Before going to the Liiga league and KHL, Hamill was bounced between the Bruins and AHL affiliates (and other AHL teams). He had his shot, unfortunately it didn’t pan out.
Post-Pick Picks: Logan Couture (9th), Ryan McDonagh (12th), Kevin Shattenkirk (14th), Max Pacioretty (22nd), David Perron (26th), PK Subban (43rd)
2008 Entry Draft, Pick #16: Joe Colborne
Now with the Calgary Flames, Colborne didn’t play a single game in a Boston jersey before being traded to Toronto.
Post-Pick Picks: Jake Gardiner (17th), Jordan Eberle (22nd), John Carlson (27th), Derek Stepan (51st)
2009 Entry Draft, Pick #25: Jordan Caron
Another first round dissapointment, Caron was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in 2014-15. He played 19 games last season, faililng to collect a single point and a measily 2 PIMs.
Post-Pick Picks: Ryan O’Reilly (33rd), Carl Klingberg (34th), Tomas Tatar (60th)
2010 Entry Draft, Pick #2: Tyler Seguin
The third successful first round pick in the last 20 years, Seguin was selected by Boston after they obtained the first round pick by Toronto in the Phil Kessel trade (at the time, Toronto didn’t know they would be picking that high). But Seguin’s off-ice attitude was stirring things up in Boston and they eventually shipped him out to Dallas.
Post-Pick Picks: Ryan Johansen (4th), Vladimir Tarasenko (16th), Justin Faulk (37th),
2011 Entry Draft, Pick #8: Dougie Hamilton
Still in his development years, Hamilton is showing to be a promising addition to the Boston Bruins defensive corps.
Post-Pick Picks: Brandon Saad (43rd), Nikita Kucherov (58th)
2012 Entry Draft, Pick #24: Malcom Subban
The younger brother of P.K. Subban, Malcom saw a single game in the 2014-15 season, taking a loss allowing 3 goals on 6 shots. He was pulled and we haven’t seen him in net since.
Post-Pick Picks: Jacob Trouba (9th), Filip Forsberg (11th), Tanner Pearson (30th)
*sigh* :(
Sad track record for sure, getting better, but seeing kessel and seguin in other uniforms kills me.
Chiarelli absolutely screwed this team!!
Update; Dougie Hamilton is no longer a Bruin... lol
This made me very sad. I always liked Mark Stuart. . .but just look at the rest of 2003. . . WOW
2002 - 2005 were stacked with mega stars.
Right Wickedasitseems, that Stanley Cup winning team that Chiarelli built was absolutely screwed. Seriously, nobody whines like Boston sports fans. Well, maybe Maple Leaf fans.
