What If Draft Selections... Detroit Red Wings Edition

Sorry Detroit fans, but this one is quite sad. Since the year 2000, the Detroit Red Wings have made 7 first-round selections. All others were traded off for assets and players, but to have only 7 picks in 15 years, considering the abundance of talent that has emerged since, is the main reason why Detroit isn’t the Dynasty Team they were in the days of Steve Yzerman.
With stars like Zetterberg and Datsyuk gaining age and being more susceptible to injury, Detroit is going to need to collect more picks to make up for those losses. Even more unfortunate for detroit, most the years in which they did have a first-round pick, there were slim pickings.
2000 Entry Draft, Pick #29: Nicklas Kronwall
The best first-round pick Detroit has made in the last 15 years, but unfortunately, his time to hang his skates is coming sooner rather than later.
Post-Pick Picks: Iilya Bryzgalov (44th)
2005 Entry Draft, Pick #19: Jakub Kindl
After 10 years, he’s still being bounced around the NHL and AHL. Considering the talent-heavy draft year, this one didn’t turn out to be as hopeful as Detroit wanted.

2007 Entry Draft, Pick #27: Brendan Smith
Despite playing in over 170 games with the Red Wings, Smith has only rallied 9 goals and 31 assists.

2008 Entry Draft, Pick #30: Thomas McCollum
He played two games for Detroit as an call-up when Howard and Mrazek were hurt, but the 25th year old spends most of his time in the AHL now. But this wasn’t a talent-heavy year, so they did the best they could.

2010 Entry Draft, Pick #21: Riley Sheahan
Sheahan had a decent near-full season campaign with Detroit last year. It looks like he’s there to stay, considering the injury prone Centers the team has.

2013 Entry Draft, Pick #20: Anthony Mantha
Now with Grand Rapids, he signed a 3 year entry contract with Detroit in 2013. He has yet to play in an NHL game.
