Numerous reports from Eklund suggest that Nikolai Zherdev could be on his way to Montreal if Bob Gainey can pull the trigger on a deal. I'm hoping that Alexei Kovalev goes the other way...
To CLB:
Kovalev
5th Rd. Pick
To MTL:
Zherdev
3rd Rd. Pick
Zherdev didn't have as many points as Kovalev last year, but he has potential, he's young {23 yrs.} and he's got tremendous upside. Fast, great shot, knows were to be....most of his goals come when he's in the right place at the right time, not 'cause of luck, but because of good hockey sense. He's proven he can score in this league {he had 27 goal the year before the lockout}. And his contract is only worth 2.5 million, compared to Kovalev's 4.5.
Zherdev has also shown he comes through in the clutch...example; 3-2 Chicago leading Columbus...30 seconds left...Zherdev pulls a coast-to-coast split the D undress the goalie goal, ties the game. When was the last time Kovalev did that?
Also, Saku Koivu makes people around him better-he makes Michael Ryder better, he makes Kovy better, he made Latendresse better, he makes Higgins better. He can make Zherdev better. I like the look of the team with Zherdev.
