Before yesterday's atrocity, Marty Brodeur had played in 153 NHL playoff games. Out of those 153 games, he had 89 victories, and 21 shutouts. Over that time, he had a 1.88 goals against average.
We on the other hand, had Holmqvist, Denis, and Ramo. Before the game began, they had combined for all of 0 NHL playoff games, 0 wins, and 0.00 save percentage.
Very comforting going into a series in which goaltending is the key.
In the regular season series, Tampa was 3-1 against Jersey, 2-0 away from the Forum. In his two previous visits to the swamp, 'Homer' had only let in 3 goals, winning the two games 3-2(SO) and 4-1 after giving up 4 to the NYR.
The only win by the Devils was in Tampa, a 2-0 shutout, number 11 for Brodeur on the year (I believe). In that game, Holmqvist did play amazingly. He only gave up one, the other was an empty netter, which ensured the victory.
One thought, though - On March 22nd, Holmqvist was out with the flu, and Marc Denis stepped in and managed to raise his game to beat Brodeur 3-1. That has to give some sort of hope, maybe.
