I don't like making posts about games I never went to, but I feel this one should be an exception. I'm going to go through the game sheet so you can get an idea of the twists and turns of this game.
1st Period
2.30 Blaze score on the powerplay - Huppe from Weaver and Cloutier. They now lead 3-1 on aggregate
2.34 Jeremy Cornish and new two-way signing for Coventry Andrew Sharp fight. Cornish is clearly trying to motivate the Steelers.
11.32 It appears to have worked. Dagenais scores for Sheffield, from Manzano and Finnerty. 3-2 to Blaze on aggregate.
17.23 Blaze respond, Moore from Stewart and Martin. It's 2-1 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate.
19.26 Another powerplay goal for Sheffield, levelling on the night.. Finnerty from Cornish and Dagenais. 4-3 Blaze on aggregate.
2nd Period
30.45 Quiet second period is awoken by Calder for Coventry, assists from Carlson and Huppe. On the powerplay, naturally. 5-3 Blaze on aggregate.
31.02 Could the tie be in the bag? 4-2 on the night and 6-3 on aggregate, Russ Cowley from Cloutier and Huppe.
31.47 Steelers get some secondary scoring, the 3rd line chips in, Hewitt from Dowd and Phillips. Now 4-3 and 6-4 on aggregate.
39.56 What a time for an equaliser. Dagenais gets his 2nd of the evening, from Phillips and Dowd. 4-4 on the night and 6-5 to Blaze on aggregate.
3rd Period
47.12 And the comeback is complete! Talbot from Legue and Sheppard makes it 5-4 Sheffield and 6-6 on aggregate.
48.41 Don't call it a comeback! Dowd from Finnerty and Sarich as Sheffield lead 6-4 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate. Incidentally, Rob Dowd isn't even a full time member of the Steelers squad. I suspect he will be soon.
55.47 The man of clutch goals comes up trumps for the Blaze - Jon Weaver from Stewart and Calder. 6-5 Sheffield and 7-7 on aggregate.
60.00 With the score level, overtime approaches.
Overtime
63.46 GOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL! It's that man again, Weaver from Carlson and Calder, Blaze win 8-7 on aggregate. The extra period is now officially known as Weavertime.
So I'm a little upset for not going, but some good work was done in Coventry instead, and we can look forward to the semi finals. It would appear we've drawn Edinburgh, with the other semi being Basingstoke against Hull.
This upcoming weekend, Blaze have Cardiff in a 'home and home', down in Wales on Saturday night and back in the Midlands on Sunday. It's a shame the new guy Sharp won't be in the line up to face perennial agitator Brad Voth, that would've been interesting. Bring on the hockey!
