Sens And Canes Swap 4

The first big trade has happened. Cory Stillman and Mike Commodore are headed to the Ottawa, while Patrick Eaves and Joe Corvo are headed to Carolina.
This is very good trade by Bryan Murray, taking advantage of Carolina's desperation for a puck moving defenceman. He brings in two guys who know how to win in the post-season and have a wealth of playoff experience. They bring a combined 3 cup rings and 123 playoffs games of experience. Cory Stillman, 34, brings the offensive skills of a top six player, something Murray has coveted since the begining of the season. He has 21 goals and 46 points on the season and should fit beautifully on a line with Mike Fisher or Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley. Mike Commodore, 28, is a defensive defenseman who will bring more bone crushing hits and blocked shots to what had become a porous defense corps. He'll likely be paired with Wade Redden and should take alot of pressure of Ottawa's top pairing of Chris Phillips and Anton Volchenkov.
Going to Carolina is defenseman Joe Corvo and forward Patrick Eaves. Corvo had been playing as the 5th defencemen in Ottawa for last season and so far this season. He has been consider highly overpaid for what he does in Ottawa and it was rumour that Murray was looking to get his salary off the books for next season. He should be a welcome addition to the Canes blueline, which lacked a puck moving defenseman. Patrick Eaves is a player that has been plagued this season with two shoulder injuries and hasn't been a big factor in Ottawa. He has struggled to find his scoring touch that we saw two years ago and should be a good addition to Carolina as he is still young (24) and has plenty of upside.
Also, Stillman is a UFA at the end of this season and is currently has a cap hit of 1.75 million. He'll likely be resigned by Murray, and if not, a prospect, such as Ilya Zubov can fill his spot. Mike Commodore is in the same situation, a UFA at the end of the season and will likely be resigned by Ottawa. Joe Corvo has a season remaining on his contract, with a cap hit of 2.626 million and Patrick Eaves is a RFA at the end of the season.
This trade could also be a sign that either Forsberg is about to sign with another team or that he won't return for the season as I highly doubt Murray would of made this trade if he didn't know something about the Forsberg situation.

This trade is probably a sign that Murray believes it's more important to make constructive moves with what you know rather than gamble on what may or may not be (aka. Forsberg). With the Sens so close to post season success, it's important to make the steady decision as opposed to the gambling decision. This is a great move and I don't necessarily think the Canes are losing out so to speak.Even with Stillman gone, they have a lot of depth. It's unfortunate for them that Justin Williams got injured at the end of the year otherwise they would be in much better shape.Good trade for all sides. A smart trade especially for the Senators. It will be interesting to see how Eaves develops outside of his Ottawa experience.
trading eaves and corvo for 2 RFA`s is a big gamble. The Sens better turn this into a Cup THIS year - otherwise this deal is a failure and a big one. This was a brilliant move by Rutherford - should show teams (cough LEAFS) how to translate pieces into valuable assets. This is called rebuilding on the fly and without giving up your chances to win now - simply brilliant move by Rutherford and nice move for Ottawa if they win now - and no doubt, this deal will help them now...
Not sure I agree Cartika. Commodore's not going anywhere I don't think and Murray has made it plain as day that he'd like to keep Stillman. If the Sens sign those two guys, then it literally becomes Corvo and Eaves for Stillman and Commodore - which is a huge upgrade for the Sens any way you slice it. If they don't re-sign, now the Sens have the $$ to go after hometown boy Danny Boyle on D and perhaps a veteran such as Andrew Brunette for the wings. It was a shrewd, $$-saving move by Murray...unless he chooses option B and re-signs them.
