Here's a Swedish newspaper claiming that Sundin has chosen to play for the Vancouver Canucks next year. Could be just a rumour, could be true. Who knows, but fuel to the fire.

According to information provided to DN leaving Mats Sundin Toronto for Vancouver.
Sundin ready for Vancouver

He is a Swedish ishockeys hottest transition. Mats Sundin is as reported by Daily News ready for Vancouver. -- I talked to Vancouver yesterday, saying "Sudden" agent Claes Elefalk.

New York Rangers wanted him, Detroit as well. Probably half the NHL as well. However, according to the Daily News has Mats Sundin decided for now to extend his career, in a completely different club. He leaves Toronto, ishockeyns the capital, where he was larger than the city's mayor, of Vancouver, where he becomes lagkamrat with, among others, the brothers Sedin.

A source of Daily News said the following on the Sundin situation:

His agent in North America declined to KHL (the Russian superligan) on the grounds that he is fully ready for Vancouver. The fact that he has written on, why would he say if otherwise. He may, of course, a large sum of money in the event of a overgÄng here, "said the source.

Sundin agent Claes Elefalk also recognizes that Sundin and the club is in contact.

Not that it still can't happen, but Sundin's Swedish representative is denying it. Could be that someone just jumped onto a story that didn't have much truth to it. Right now seems like Mats still hasn't made a decision, but at least for Vancouver it doesn't mean he's excluded them.

Seems the whole story originates with the Russian league making an offer to Sundin and being told by Sundin's agent, likely in confidence, that Sundin is not available because he's signing with Vancouver. The reporter then gets this story from the russians, and then gets nothing but denials from Sundin's people. If they did not want the story to be broken yet, they of course would offer nothing but denials. The reporter essentially states in the article, why would the Russian's lie?

It was a rumour and is still a rumour. All we've heard so far from the Sundin camp is the same 'company line' we've been hearing for 2 months: Mats doesn't know if he wants to play hockey next year.I believe Mats does know if he wants to play hockey. So, in that case I'm not buying the 'company line' from the Mats camp. As for the Swedish paper rumour, who knows. It could be legit, or perhaps not. It did presumably have to pass out of at least 3 mouths and into 4 sets of ears before it got to paper.
