After some off season changes to improve the teams "character", there are still some concerns that linger from last season. I do love what Ruutu and Smith bring to the team and Kuba seems to be fitting in nicely. However, the tandem of Heatley and Spezza are still having problems w/o Alfie on their line. I think Alfie is just able to anticipate Spezza's defensive short comings better then anyone else on the team. Spezza is a great playmaker, but his penchant for untimely drop passes and junior style dekes drive me crazy! I love watching him create a scoring chance, but I always worry that it will end up a chance for the opponent. I really hope that Hartsburg will be able to drill some commen sense into Spezza's head, helping him understand when to go with the simple play vs the high risk fancy ass stuff.
Now to Gerber. I really like this guy and want him to succeed, but I think he cracks under the pressure. He was brilliant for MOST of the game against Detroit, ALMOST stealing the game single handidly. Unfortunately, he let in a couple of softies and the debate is back on. I'm not sure that Auld is the answer either. Again, I like his character and I want him to do well, but I'm not completely confident. I'm sure that the team feels the same way and it affects everyone's play. What to do? I'm sure that Brian Murray has been trying to do something to improve the goaltending since the last trade deadline, but what is out there?
Again, Hartsburg may be able to correct these issues through some solid coaching. And it's only been 3 games. As usual, I will sit on the sidelines and hope that everything gels at the right time.
