Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn both had good seasons for the Habs last year and this season looks to be their breakout years. In only three games this season, Sergei has obtained 5 points and looks dominating at times on the ice surface. As for his brother Andrei he only has 2 points but seems to have improved his game over the summer. Some might even say these two are well on their way to enjoying the stardum of the Sedin twins and after only 3 games this season, it's hard to argue that point.
Unlike the Sedins, the Kostitsyns don't play on a line together but have found success with other teammates. Andei plays alongside his comrads of last season: Kovalev and Tomas Plekanec, who where one of the most dominating trios of 07-08. Sergei however, is paired up alongside newly aquired Robert Lang and the bruising Tom Kostopulous, who will most likely be downgraded once Chris Higgins makes his return from a groin injury. Sergei has already shown great chemistry with Lang and the return of Higgins could create something special on this line, that is if Coach Guy Carbonneau does not disrupt the success of the Tanguay-Koivu-Latendresse line. If this early point in the season is what we can expect from the Bleu Blanc Rouge, this could be one of the most talented Canadiens teams since the 70's, and that's pretty scary when you're the opposition. Just ask Vesa Toskala and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The emergence of these two brothers not only gives the Habs three great scoring lines, but adds to the depth of an already deep team. The habs' future and present looks great and look for these two young guns to be the two main offensive contributors if the Habs win the Cup in the near futur.
Predictions for this season:
Andrei: 38 goals, 35 assits - 73 points
Sergei: 21 goals, 39 assists - 60 points
In a couple of years, when the old part of our team will be gone, i am sure a lot of the offensive will rely on these two brothers that could be completing a line with plekanec.
I don't think so. Too me they look more like a poor man's duo of Kovalev and Kovalchuk if you want to compare them to other players. They just don't play the same style as the Sedins, whose forte is in cycling the puck.
