I like the bold move in acquiring Pronger. Many people are saying that Philly overpaid for him. I do not agree in that assessment.
What did they give up?
Lupul is an offensively skilled/defensively challenged winger on a team that has 9+ guys that can score. With Briere back Lupuls production is easily picked up since Danny is a much better scorer. Sbisa is a young defenseman on a team loaded with young defensemen. The 1st round picks are 20-30 range picks that may or may not pan out in the long run. I know Richards was taken in the 22 range, but for every hit at that range there is a solid guy or a bust also. Even the #1 pick overall is not a sure thing (see Patrick Stephan, Alexander Daigle, etc.).
What did they get?
What the Flyers got was a kick-ass defenseman on a team without a kickass defenseman! Pronger has been durable, a winner, a leader, and dominant his entire career.
Overall I like the deal. I see that the coaches can now keep one of our top defensemen on the ice the entire game. By splitting Pronger, Timonen and Coburn to the 3 pairs, they can balance the ice time and keep a QUALITY defenseman on the ice at all times!
