The Buffalo Sabres and AHL-affiliate Portland Pirates announced the name of the Pirates' new play-by-play announcer today. Mark Jeanneret. Sound familiar? If you call yourself a Sabres fan from the Buffalo area it should. Mark Jeanneret is the son of the Sabres' play-by-play man Rick Jeanneret.
Mr. Jeanneret came to the Sabres in 1971 after doing color and play-by-play for the Niagara Falls Flyers and the Cincinnati Swords. Alongside well-known play-by-play man Ted Darling, Rick did color and play-by-play for the Sabres until 1991, when he took over the full-time job. Ted Darling was forced to retire due to Pick's Disease, and unfortunately, passed away in 1996. When the HSBC Arena opened for the 1996-97 season, the press box was named "The Ted Darling Memorial Press Box" in his honor.
Jeanneret has worked with many Buffalo favorites: Jim Lorentz, Danny Gare, Rob Ray, and Mike Robitaille, just to name a few. Although it is rumored that he will retire, Jeanneret's contract has been extended by the Sabres through the 09-10 season.
Mark Jeanneret has over 800 games experience as a play-by-play man with the OHL's Erie Otters. For the Pirates, he is also assuming the positions of Director of Communication and Team Services.
I won't lie, I have never heard Mark call a game, however I am very excited to see what he can do. I am a huge fan of what Rick has done for the Sabres Organization and for the city of Buffalo, and I am hoping that the addition of Mark to the Pirates will only lead to good things.

He sounds like Rick after taking a helium shot! lol
I like RJ as much as anyone. When he retires I'm not looking for an imitation and that is all his son is. I want a replacement with his own sound and style.
