The Devils looked GREAT tonight. This was a huge statement win to show that the Devils will continue to contend in the Atlantic. They are now 5-0 on the road and are off to a 6-3 start. Here are some notes from the win:
-The power play looked very, very good. I don't think the second power play line had scored all year, but they moved the puck well, and eventually a Bergfors tip found the back of the net. The goal was assisted by Rod Pelley, who earned his first career NHL point.
-There was another 'first' in this one. Devils defenseman Mark Fraser scored his first career NHL goal in this contest. Ironically, it was the first goal by a Devils defenseman this season, as Fraser filled in for the injured Mike Mottau. Great to see his smile after the tally.
-The reunification of the ZZ Pop line was a success. Early in the third period, Travis Zajac gave the Devs a 3-0 lead, and late in the third, Zach Parise put the game away with a beautiful backhand goal, avoiding a poke check from Marc-Andre Fleury and splitting the defense of the Penguins.
-The injuries to Pando and Martin could potentially come back to bite New Jersey. Pandolfo was hit by former teammate Mike Rupp and did not return to the game after skating off. He was upset by the hit, as his postgame comments showed. Martin left with about six minutes remaining and did not return.
-Danius Zubrus looked a lot better tonight. Early on this season, he had struggled, but now he is really seeming to thrive in Jacques Lemaire's system. Great puck movement and passing from the veteran, who had an assist on Fraser's goal.
-Marty played great tonight, and his only mistake was on Pitt's loan goal. He made all the saves in this one, nothing flashy, but got the job done and did it well.
-Any time you beat a team like the Penguins, the defending cup champs, there should be a confidence boost in the locker room. The Devils have won 3 straight and 5 of their last 6, and have seemed to put their 0-2 start behind them. Next up is Buffalo. Let's see if the Devils can improve that home record.
The third period was a completely different story as the Voltigeurs dominated Montreal, outshooting them 19-9 in the third https://testmyspeed.onl/ frame.
