Rangers Reportedly Sign Swedish Elite League Star

With credit to Damian Cox of the Toronto Star, TSN.ca reported last night that the New York Rangers have agreed to a deal with, what some consider the under sized Mats Zuccarello-Aasen. Zuccarello-Aasen hails from Norway, and in the 2010 Olympic Games he lead his nation in scoring in their four games in the tournament.
In 55 games for Modo in the Swedish Elite League the 5'7" winger posted 64 points (23 goals,41 assists), which put him tops in scoring. The 23 year old was reported also heavily courted by the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Due to international transfer agreements, its believed the contract agreement will not be made official until after the World Championships.
The apparent signing of Zuccarello-Aasen adresses some core needs that Rangers Head Coach John Tortorella outlined this past Tuesday at the team's break-up day after missing the playoffs for the first time since the lockout. This would be the first sign that the team is being a bit proactive in that regard. Couple this deal, with the 10th pick in the June Entry Draft and the goal of getting younger can be achieved.
