So rumor has it that Ilya Kovalchuk may settle for something less then a billion dollars over 2 years. Apparently, the Flyers have shown direct interest in signing this 50 goal scorer. But with cap issues already a problem, this may be a little more difficult then it appears.
With Simon Gagne rumored to be on his way out, this will bring the Eastern Conference Champions to a little below the cap. Now add Nikolai Zherdev's one year deal to the mix plus, the possible addition of another goalie (rumored to be Marty Turco). This easy signing just became a little bit more difficult.
The Flyers may want to consider dishing out Jeff Carter while their at it if they really want Kovalchuk because as it appears, this man isn't coming cheap. Sure the rumors are that he may only sign for a year, but this is the same guy that turned down offers from the Devils, Kings, and Islanders. You may want to consider adding the Flyers to that list soon too.
The only thing we can hope, is that come opening day, Kovalchuk is in the NHL and not the dreaded KHL (who have also shown interest in Kovalchuk). Honestly, it's safe to say that the Kings and Devils are the only teams as of now that really have a shot at this money hungry All-Star. In the mind of myself and all hockey fans alike, we cannot wait for this saga to end.
