Since Chris Drury and Danny Briere have left Buffalo, one thing has been lacking.... leadership, accountability and stanley cup expierence, all of which unfortunatley cant be bought with a 7 -10 million dollar hockey player whom as only been to the playoffs once in 8 years and has struggles in his own zone defensively. A russian with a questionable desire and work ethic is the last thing this team needs despite his elite talent, and btw can someone tell me why lindy ruff would want another top line 7 million dollar left winger on his roster when he already has a Vanek who buys into his system? I doubt i want either playing second line minutes, and sure you always can put them on the same line, forcing one to switch positions, but theres no gaurentee that it will work, with the potential for disaster. Do we also really want to join the long line of teams who ve paid huge money and long term deals of 8 million to players whom have been disappointing and have just been players teams have wanted to unload, (Briere, Drury, Campbell, LeCavlier, DiPietro)
Enter everything the sabres need... Patrick Sharp. A breakout star after being acquired from philadelphia, fresh off a stanley cup victory on a young team, where he was a fixture. Perfect for lindy ruff's system, Sharp is among one of the leagues best penalty killers and a solid versitle player, (like Drury) who also has a knack for scoring big goals. Affordable at 4 million a year, Chicago's fire sale could continue with the often rumored to be dealt Sharp, who also like drury was in both Colorado and Calgary was a great second liner on a great team who could be solid on a first line in Buffalo making a step up. The Sabres core of players such as Vanek, Pomminville, Roy and Connolly are all solid players but not one player on this roster has shown the leadership needed to be a stanley cup champion. The same could have been said about the team before Drury and Briere's arrival. Sharp, 29 could be the one guy who could come into this Sabre locker room and lead by example, and help out vetran players such as Rivet, Grier and Niedermeyer bring some accountability to a young team.
