This saga no doubt will go down to the wire on Aug 15. Burke may be waiting for a team to panic but that could risky. As we all know it's now or never. If Kabby is a Leaf after Aug 15 than this situation is basically over. Leafs cannot trade Kabby after that & he will not waive his NTC next Feb. So he than walks away nest summer. Burke can spin it that if Kabby is not dealt by Aug 15, he may try to re-sign him but than the cap hit on the D will be a serious anchor. The only thing I can think of is that, if he can't deal Kabby, he may have to unload Komi or Beuchamin in a salary dump type of deal. There is no way the Leafs can re-sign Kabby & keep this entire D group, the cap space won't allow it. Something has to give eventually.
So for the next week & more I expect this Kabby saga to keep going. Things should heat up between Aug 9-13 as a deal has to be made by Aug 14 before midnight. I really think Burke is treating this like an NHL trade deadline & that's a risky way to play this.
