So let me get this straight? Ron Hextall takes a lateral move back to Philly...... While this doesn't seem strange to some, to me a Leaf's fan this is a bit concerning. You have to respect Paul Holmgren and his bold moves, although not all have worked out for him, some have.

It's my belief (obviously) that bringing in Hextall is a signal that Paul Holmgren will either be fired or slowly moved out. The whole hockey world know Philly's ownership has a STRONG desire to win, and they do not sit well with failure.

Holmgren has been willing to deal with division rivals and just about anyone to get what he wants, thats bold! Where most would shutter at the thought of dealing with Toronto for anything (as a Philly gm), Paul got the Schenn brothers united, it cost him a bit but was not a one sided deal, Luke has a TON of upside.

Now should the inevitable happen and Hextall take over as GM, Toronto loses a trading partner or at least a back board in Holmgren, although he would not be out of work for long.......(see Brian Burke).

Franson:

Crazy that this guy did not file for arbitration??? Or is it?

Cody knows full well that UFA is not what is used to be, teams cringe at the thought of losing a players rights, so unless a player is determined to move elsewhere or just not part of any teams deadline needs he will be a UFA.

Cody can get the same amount of money in RFA that he would have gotten in UFA had there been no cap. The commodity for anyone now is players rights, and not the player himself. This is similar to the hype that always surrounds draft picks, the player never turns out to justify the hype of being a first rounder. So the value is always in the hype to watchers but the smarter GM's know its just hype.

Cody will likely sign in Toronto for 3.25 million on a 3 year deal, most of that will be front loaded to keep him happy. Cody likes money more than most players and is willing to sit to get. Smart move for him, bad days for Toronto. Clearly you cannot put, Gunnerson, Kadri, Fraser, Franson in 9.7 million dollars of cap space.

Even if you drop Fraser, Gunner is sure to get 2.25 that drops Toronto to 7.5 mill in space, and I can tell ya right now that Kadri is looking for 4.5 million plus on a 4-5 year deal. So lets say he settles in at 4.25, that leaves 3.25 in space. Thats an uncomfortable predicament for Nonis. Its not that the leafs do not want to spend the money on players but cap space is a valuable commodity come deadline time, and Dave is sure to want to lock up the two most unappreciated players (by silly leaf fans) in Toronto Maple Leaf's history.

So what Now??? Well the whole of leaf nation is gonna cry to move Liles, and yes that makes the most sense, but his value with that contract is NOT a second rounder coming back. So what do you package him with too get some value or assets, and let alone who would want him?

Don't say edmonton.......Don't do it.........

Okay Edmonton, possibly Minnesota, Anaheim, Tampa Bay, New York Islanders, Dallas.
No one else really wants a puck mover like him with that cap hit, although in Liles defense (all pun intended) he is a stand up guy, and a class act in and out of the dressing room.

So lets say its edmonton first, who and what goes and come's, I would love to say Smid, who seems to be the rumour mongers choice, but he comes with a cap hit of 3.5, so thats just a saving of 385k. Doesn't make sense...........Unless Edmonton is willing to take back some cap room, which they would if the price is right. Now even without the cap room the Oilers are not gonna do Player for player it doesn't make sense. So I would propose this:

To Leafs:

Ladislav Smid, 5th rounderand 525k which is max 15% of players salary in cap space.

To Oilers:

J.M Liles, Ashton. Rights to Leo Komorov (if they do not sign him, a fourth Rounder).

Seems like an over payment in my eye's but when you analyse it, It makes sense for both teams.

I think his worth on the market is a fair 3rd rounder or Plugger forward prospect, nothing more because of the cap hit. Dallas may be gunning for that puck mover. Anaheim may jump on Burke's recommendation, because Burkie knows Liles Value as a person.

Well thats it hope you like my blog, I welcome all respectful comments and dialogue.
