Let's face facts Sabre Nation, the boys in the suits are not going to spend to the cap next year and it seems very possible they actually spend less then last year. That is why it is virtulally impossible to keep both Drury and Briere. That being said here is what I think the roster could look like next season. This involves letting Briere and Zubrus walk, not offering Numminen a contract and finding a way to trade Kalinin and Kotalik, say for draft picks. It also involves signing one free agnet, that being Scott Hannan from the Sharks. The cap numbers for the players are accurate except for the players in italics which had to be guesstimated.

Vanek 3.5M
Afinogenov 3.33M
Connolly 2.9M
Hecht 2.2M
Roy 2.2M
Pominville 1.03M
Stafford .98M
Paille .9M
Mair .75M
Gaustad .71M
Kaleta .49M
Defensemen 14.52M
Hannan 3.5M
Spacek 3.33M
Lydman 2.88M
Tallinder 2.56M
Campbell 1.5M
Paestch .75M

That equals 42.79M for those 20 playes, plus lets say they carry Peters as an extra forward for 600K, so that is a cap number of about 43.4M next year. Doable I would hope.
I would break down the lines as follows
Vanek Drury Stafford (Three very heady players would mesh well)
Pominville Connolly Afinogenov (Timmy feeding Pommer works)
Hecht Roy Paille (A decent checking line then can score)
Mair Gaustad Kaleta (I wouldn't want to play againist that line)
Tallinder Lydman
Hannan Campbell
Spacek Paestch
I think that is still a good team but still not tough enough to win the playoff battles. It's team that finishes second in its division and will end up the 4 or 5 seed in the playoffs.
There you have it. I know we probably won't sign Hannan but hey, there is a chance we try to get tougher back their and we should give it a shot.
