The Newmarket Hurricanes would finally take part in their home opener of the 2012-2013 season yesterday afternoon after starting this year’s campaign with a 6 game road trip and finishing up with a record of 4-1-1 and picking up 9 out of a possible 12 points. The Hurricanes opponents yesterday afternoon were the Cobourg Cougars who had beaten Newmarket on the previous road trip in overtime by a score of 2-1.

The crowd of close to 400 got into the action right away as the hometown Hurricanes found themselves on the board at 1:17 of the opening frame thanks to a goal from Hurricanes Defensemen Austin Rigney with assists coming from Ian Farrell and Canes youngster Travis Dermott. After that Newmarket would continue to pile on the pressure but were unable to beat Cougars goalie Joe Keyser anymore as he was able to keep his team in the hunt with the 1st period came to an end with the Canes out shooting Cobourg 18-6 but only being up 1-0 thanks to Rigney’s tally.

The 2nd period would see Newmarket start the action a man short as rookie defensemen Sean Walker would be serving a minor penalty for holding which he picked up at the 20 minute mark of the opening frame and at 1:54 of the 2nd period with just 6 seconds remaining in Walkers minor penalty the visiting Cougars would find themselves tied at 1 with the goal coming from Colbie Andrews. A few minutes later Newmarket would find themselves a man short as once again Walker would be serving a minor this time for tripping. This time the visiting team would find themselves ahead as Taylor Gauld would put the Cougars up 2-1 thanks to his power play marker. Newmarket would be able to gain their composure and play with much better discipline and it would show as they only found themselves playing a man short for the 3rd and final time, a cross checking minor by Austin Rigney which the Canes managed to kill off.

The Hurricanes would manage to pull themselves even as off season acquisition Brycin Morrison would come streaking into the offensive zone and firing a shot off the post past Keyser to tie the score at 2 with assists coming from David Savery and Sean Walker earning him some redemption for his two penalties earlier. The Hurricanes would get some work on the power play as Cobourg would be called for having too many men on the ice and after many chances David Savery would put the Canes ahead 3-2 after a scramble in front of the goal with Dermott and Farrell picking up their second assists of the game, this would be the only power play goal the Canes score from their 5 advantages. The action was a little closer after 40 minutes of play with Cobourg leading in shots 17-16 but Newmarket holding a 3-2 lead heading into the 3rd and final frame.
The final 20 minutes got underway and the hometown crowd didn’t have to wait long for their Hurricanes to add to their lead as once again Brycin Morrison would fire a quick shot off the post and in for his second goal of the night to put Newmarket ahead by a score of 4-2 with the only assist coming from Defensemen Phil Kiss, he was also picked up by the Canes in the summer. The Hurricanes would then play a conservative game and put the game on ice when at 19:17 of the 3rd period with Cobourg’s Keyser watching from the bench Matt LeMasurier would collect his 2nd goal of the season as he sent the puck into the open goal for the final goal of the night clinching a well deserved 5-2 win for the Division leading Newmarket Hurricanes. Assists on this 5th goal would come from Morrison for his 3rd and final point of the night and newly named Captain Chris Chiste who was credited with the 2nd assist.
The next action for the Hurricanes will come Thursday night as the Whitby Fury making the trip to Newmarket but Newmarket will head into action with the hopes of erasing the 4-0 loss suffered by Whitby this being the Hurricanes only regulation loss on their 6 game season opening road trip.

One side note I would like to mention is yesterday’s game was Canes goalie Matt Wintjes 7th consecutive start of the season and with him already having 5 wins early in this young season I think it would be safe to say he will get the start on Thursday at the Complex against the Fury.

My next blog will come after Thursdays game so until then thank you for taking the time to read my first Hurricane write up.
