For the next couple days I'm going to be doing write-ups on all of the players MacTavish could possibly announce at the podium on Sunday. All of this is based around them staying at #7 overall and that they don't trade the pick to move up or for an immediate player. I'm going to go in the order that the players are ranked on the NHL's central scouting rankings. So I'm going to start with Barkov, then Nichuskin, Monahan and then Lindholm. I choose to do these players because they are the types of players that Edmonton's looking for and they might still be around when Edmonton's picking.
Let's get started!
Sasha, Alexander, Whateverhisnameis Barkov is proberly the most unlikely player on this list because there is a 99% chance he won't be on the board by 7th overall pick. But if he is he will definatly be the Oilers selection because he's exactly what they want.
Barkov is the complete package. He is tall and has terrrific technical skills, puck control, etc. But what really makes him stand out is his hockey IQ. He has the best hockey sense in this draft class. He quickly analyze's the play and can always find open ice to get open for the puck, and he can also always find his teammates and set them up for a shot on net. Barkov is also strong on his skates. He isn't super physical but he uses his body when he needs to and he doesn't get knocked off his feet easily. He needs to improve on his skating. He's not a weak skater by any means but it's keeping him from reaching that line that seperates good players, and superstar's.
Barkov would be a good fit in Edmonton because they lack size in their top 6. Gagner is good but is small and even though he's tough is pushed around too much by other thems. Barkov is big and will make Edmonton's top 6 bigger and will be able to step into the NHL next year and be a good 2nd line center to replace Gagner. We would also be able to trade Gagner for another 1st round pick this year if we drafted Barkov and we could use that pick on Lazar who the Oilers management really likes. Lazar is a big 2-way center that would fit perfectly on our 3rd line. So drafting Barkov could get us our 2nd and 3rd line centers for the next 20 years and make the lines....
Hall - Nuge - Eberle
Paajarvi - Barkov - Yakupov
UFA - Lazar - Jones
Petrell - Lander - Brown
This would be a big improvement on what we have now and will be great a couple years down the road. Barkov would be a great choice with the 7th overall pick this year for the Oilers. If he's available..........
