Maple Leaf Woes

Posted 2:32 PM ET | Comments 0
I sat down today and have been reading some of the blogs from this site about the leafs. I must say I have thought that they have been very good. In a sense I have felt that it would be better for the Leafs to miss the playofss for most of the year. Why? Because I have been a Maple leafs fan for many years and have seen the Leafs repeat history over and over again.

There have been many times in history that the Leafs have made a late season charge and been satisfied with making the playoffs and not made many changes. It seems that the only time changes have been made are when the club misses the post season party. In my mind we needed to change our GM. I felt that Ferguson has not shown very much as a GM and was hoping that they would dismiss JFJ and replace him with one of hockeys top execs.

Reading the blogs today however it has occured to me that what the Leafs need to do is to dismiss management at a higher level. I believe that the problem may be at the Richard Peddie level. You see we all know that MLSE is owned by the Teachers union. The idea that they do not want the Leafs to win is absurd. There is a salary cap so we are not talking about saving them money by being mediocre. What is it then that would stop them from trying to be better? I will tell you. It is the guys at the top who are making the decisions for the club. The ones who can see their jobs are safe because the Leafs continue to make money. They realise they do not have to spend time thinking about the Leafs. All that the board has to do is realise that pursuing a championship does not necessarily have to cost huge money and the top execs will be in trouble.

My blog for today is to suggest that the Leafs need to make a change and bring in a hockey guy that will be free to make all hockey decisions that will actively pursue a championship. Make people at the higher level accountable as well. I know this may be a pipe dream but I am tired of continuing to hear our GM is a puppet and that he is not being allowed to do what is best for the team. If that is the case it is time to cut ties with whoever is making these decisions.
