Avalanche Season

Posted 12:54 AM ET | Comments 6
It is officially Avalanche season and prepare yourselves folks, it's gonna be a long one. Name me another team that could be without Mikko Rantanen, Cale Makar, Nazem Kadri, Matt Calvert, Colin Wilson and starting goaltender (Gruby) and STILL keep rolling through the league... Don't worry i'll wait...

Sure it was the lowly and I mean LOWLY Detroit Redwings, but ask Leafs fans what it takes to coax a win out of Michael Hutchinson this season.

Pavel Francous has stepped into the net since Philipp Grubauer went down and been simply lights out, going 6-0-1 in his 7 starts while looking like yet another steal for Joe Sakic at 2 million per year over the next 2 seasons. Seriously, what can't Super Joe do?

Plenty of people went after the Avalanche for "playing it safe" at the deadline and not acquiring a big name or at least some help in net (Hutchinson?!?!).. But what these "experts" failed to take in to account was the fact that the Avalanche will at some point be adding 2 top 6 forwards in Rantanen and Kadri, grinder Matt Calvert and their NUMBER 1 goalie to a group that is already firmly entrenched as a STANLEY CUP CONTENDER. Besides adding another versatile winger in Namestnikov (for a 4th?? Thanks again Ottawa) There was absolutely no reason to lose a year of top draft picks or mess with the chemistry in the room by shipping out a Tyson Jost or Sam Girard for 20+ games of Chris Kreider or Jean-Gabriel Pageau.

With an MVP candidate (Mackinnon), a Rookie of the Year candidate (Makar), an elite group of players under (VERY GOOD) contracts for the next few years (Kadri, Landeskog, Rantanen, Girard, Johnson), as well as one of if not the best group of prospects in the league coming up, not to mention another first round pick at the 2020 draft (who is projected to go 31st anyway?)... The future looks EXTREMELY bright for the Avalanche to be in the hunt for Lord Stanley's cup for quite some time.

Bundle up and take cover NHL... Avalanche season is upon us!

Andre Burakovsky is 20-25-45 in 58 games, has missed 8 and counting. 2nd on the team is goals, 3rd in points. He wasn't on the plane to Vancouver. Oh, and Joe got him for a 2nd and a 3rd. I understand you forgetting about him with all these damned injuries.Add Newhook, Byram and Timmins and the rest of the NHL better buckle up...

Agreed Burakovsky is yet another great trade lately, and absolutely those 3 prospects along with Kaut and Kamenev will put the Avs into another level, although I expect 1 or 2 of them will be moved between the offseason/next years deadline to add even more fire power (Drouin?)

Now MacKinnon down for 1-2 weeks, ugh! Makar back tonight thankfully. And Kadri, Burakovsky, Calvert Rantanen are all supposedly close to returning this homestand. As far as the topic above, don't forget the Avs will lose someone to Seattle in the expansion draft. Quite possibly Zadorov or Jost. Namestinkov is another find. Hopefully he sticks next year too.

Ya I will be really interested to see how teams handle the expansion draft this time around.. Do you sacrifice a lesser player and a high pick (1st/2nd) or do you protect who you can and see what happens... If Francouz continued his strong play next year I would look into offering Seattle a 2nd round pick Grubauer to let us keep this team intact and add a veteran to back up Francouz... thoughts?
