I consider Holmgren to be a smart guy, and a pretty good GM. Typically, smart people learn from mistakes, and Homer has a biiiiiiggg mistake staring him in the face. Obviously this is his cap managment. So as the title of my blog poses...

*** What will it take to obtain JBo, and why would you do it? ***

Before i go into detail, this is a question i ask to the readers of the HB Nation. This blog is more of a component on Homer. I will not be making any hypothetical trades for his rights, or trades to remove cap space.... this is for one simple reason.

I do not want JBo
- Sure, JBo is a great defender, and if there is a spot in the flyers lineup aside from goalie that could put the flyers into a cup contender, it would be a great defensmen. However, what have flyers fans, and the rest of the league learned from the flyers cap situation? You cannot have so many long High Paying contracts on a particular team. The flyers have 6 contracts already on the table going into the 2010-2011 season that are going to total over 5 million dollars. Alongside of that is Hartnell at a whopping 4.2 mil. Oh, it would be great to mention that the Flyers' own Ladies Man himself, Joffrey Lupul, is getting that cocntract increase up to 4.25 mil... sigh ...

So, with a season where a cap likely will remain the same [which goes against the trend of an annual cap increase], the flyers are stuck in the mud. The flyers will be devoting $37.283 milllion in cap space to 7 players (Briere, Richards, Gagne, Carter, Lupul, Hartnell, and Timonen) which is more than half of their total salary cap for the entire club. In fact, that leaves roughly 20 million to be spent on the other 13 players. Unfortunately, some of those other 13 might be more deserving of those 4 mil+ contracts. See Braydon Coburn.

So this contract situation poses yet another great question.

How do you make room for a potential 7 million contract if the flyers do aquire JBo?
- Clearly, you gota drop two of those 4 mil contracts right? So basically, you gotta get rid of Lupul... who wants him at that price, Hartnell... How do you trade the soul of your team, Gagne... I wouldn't mind, Briere... Not many teams have room for his 6.5m, Carter... How do you trade your leading scorer?, or Timonen... not gonna get rid of your best defensmen for someone not as good imo.

It is said that the flyers have great offensive depth, but I do not think they are that strong up front to get rid of two of their better scorers, and replace them with rookies or cheap replacements.

So Homer, I know your reading this. Learn from your mistakes. Don't get sucked in with these wicked contracts. No room at the trade deadline is what cost you a first round victory over the penguins. Do not get JBo.

Thanks for reading, and please leave comments.

As a Rangers fan I understand your reluctance to add a high salary guy like J-Bo. Redden's, Gomez's and Drury's contracts are hamstringing us. I think the Flyers are good enough to contend if they make a couple of smaller additions to add depth; especially if Emery proves to be the same guy that backstopped Ottawa into the Cup Finals a few years back. There may likely be some solid players available for low prices because the cap isn't going to increase. I definitely agree with your thoughts on J-Bo.

Agreed. I like our team as is. Homer made an amazing turn around with this team. But that diddn't come cheap. And we're going to be dealing with the aftermath for some time. That was the Price Homer paid. I can deal with that. But I also agree the extension of Lupul makes an uneasy trend worse. The end result of this league is that players are going to need to make less. And to break the 5 mil mark, you're going to have to be extraordinary.

I agree about having too many big contract situations, but if we can get rid of brieres or lupuls for a long term bou contract ill take that any day of the week. He's a top 5 defenseman in the league and I will upset if the flyers don't end up with him this weekend.
