Luca "speedsa" Sbisa

Posted 9:58 PM ET | Comments 3
Luca Sbisa has been given the nickname speedsa for his quick legs and head on the ice. However, this nickname is also starting to mirror his quick start in the NHL.

Coming into rookie camp and training camp, no one had predicted for Sbisa to play with the Flyers. Everyone knew he would go back to juniors for atleast a year, possibly more. Sbisa's mind set was simple coming to camp, play with everything I have and learn as much as possible. This has obviously paid off, as Sbisa has played in the first two games of the Flyers season.

It is apparent John Stevens already has a lot of trust in this kid, he has played him in crucial parts of games, such as penalty kills and the tail end of the third period when the Flyers are down by a goal. Sbisa played on the second defensive pairing today, along side Braydon Coburn.

Sbisa will quickly be embraced by the fans in Philadelphia, he truly plays with his heart. The announcers tonight made comparisons to Mike Richards in that Sbisa is quietly confident. Sbisa comes out and puts everything he has into each shift, which is great to see. He has great energy that often comes with rookies. He lacks the nervousness that most rookies would have, and plays cool and composed. Although he may make a mistake here or there, the rest of his play has overshadowed that.

I see Luca Sbisa staying with us for the season, if he plays seven more games, he will be with us for good.

Nice blog, keep up the good work! I think Sbisa will eventually be sent back to juniors, but he's certainly making the decision quite difficult on Holmgren and Co.

I dont think there is anyway Sbisa can be sent down. The defense is too thin as it is so there is no way the team could handle losing another energetic young defenseman.

I can honestly see Stevens and Homer with an impassioned plea to the media. "So anyone see a reason to send this kid back down? Cause we could sure use something" It was stated early in the year to Sbisa, that everyone at camp had a chance to make the team. Sbisa has played beyond his years, he has done everything asked of him and more. He has shown maturity and poise, talent and Conditioning. There have been serious injuries to an already tenative blue line. As aprehensive as I am about letting him play a full season... he has not shown ANY real reason to not make the team. And he's shown every reason to play. I think the reason he was picked 19th was his Swiss background (Swiss players tend to be soft) . Otherwise we just got a top 5 pick at 19th. He's got a couple games left, but if he's still good then, we gotta start him.
