Sean Avery and John Tortorella have entered a new phase in their relationship, Parent-child. Avery was put in a time-out tonight by his coach after taking two selfish penalties at the end of game four almost costing the Rangers the lead. Avery has had 10 shots, 8 penalties , and has been a minus one in his four games in the playoffs. Torttorella finally had enough after Avery’s second third period goal having words with him on the bench, to the extent of telling him to “sit down and shut up.” In tonight’s 4-0 loss in D.C the Rangers managed to take nine penalties in the game giving the Caps eight power plays(which they fail to do anything with). The third period penalties were the worst as the frustrated Rangers took out their aggression on the ice giving the Capitals a multiple chances to make it 5-0. Sam Rosen of MSG network said they were penalties taken to send a message to the Capitals for game six at the Garden, but from the look on John Tortorella’s face that wasn’t the case. In the press conference following the game Tortorella said that discipline was something that they need to work on in preparation for the crucial game six. Frustration mounted as the game was coming near to an end as Colton Orr and Aaron Voros got ten minute game misconducts. The Rangers go back home for game six at the Garden Sunday where they must address the issues that have plagued them in tonight’s game.
