It is very difficult to predict how a team will perform during a season. I think this holds true for the New York Rangers. They were able to rid themselves of under-achieving Scott Gomez and were able to pick up Marian Gaborik and Chris Higgins which were two great moves for the team. These were good acquisitions but the signing of Donald Brashear for $1.4 million per season was a head scratcher. The Rangers now are going to be pressed for cap space after Callahan, Dubinsky, and Zherdev look for big raises. It should be interesting as Zherdev might be taking a walk into UFA world if the Rangers decline to give him the money the judge may offer. The Rangers have an interesting situation among them, they have the option to possibly acquire Patrick Marleau or Brad Richards but their salaries may be hard to keep if they do not get rid of Rozsival or Wade Redden.
The Rangers are entering the 2009 season with a team that will not have Colton Orr, Scott Gomez, and Frederik Sjostrom to name a few. They'll have a team that will possibly include Evgeni Grachev their young record breaking prospect, and Artem Anisimov another skilled prospect of theirs.
Look for this team to be a fast paced, high energy team that will be a threat offensively, and look for a high finish for this 2009 season.
