So what to think about the Leafs upcoming prospect Frederik Gauthier? I have no idea, I am trying to find out as much as I can about him and I’m coming up with much. He appeared as though he was a non-factor in Midget AAA in his first year, collecting just 21 points in 37 games, but somehow was drafted in the third round of the QMJHL draft, which I am guessing was probably due to his size. He went back to Midget AAA and looked as though he did something in the offseason as he went from being a 21 point player, to scoring 26 goals and 51 points in the same amount of games (well two more games). Gauthier elected to major junior and had a decent season collecting 60 points in 62 games, but was invisible in the playoffs with just two assists in six games.

I think what scares me the most, is he’s 6’5” and still growing, you don’t see many forwards or even centers at that size being that productive. Feel free to add some names, but I don’t see anyone out there other then Mats Sundin who was 6’5” that was that great. I just keeping thinking David Steckl over and over again.

On the bright side, I keep hearing Jordan Staal. Gauthier is supposed to be very similar to Jordan Staal. If we look, Staal 6’4”, 220lbs and the year he was drafted, 68 points in 68 games. Gauthier 6’5, 214lbs 60 points in 62 games. With 2013 suppose to be the deepest draft since 2003, could Gauthier be another Mike Richards, Ryan Kesler or Corey Perry 20+ pick in the draft. I hope so, but please don’t be Steckl.
