I have had the pleasure of watching the Canucks rookie camp all this week. Let me fill you in on what I saw at camp.

As Eklund said, Victoria native Taylor Ellington had a very good camp. In 60 games last year with the Evertt Silvertips of the WHL, he scored 5 goals along with 8 assists. Although he does not look like he'll be a huge point producer at the NHL level, he looked very sound defensively in the rookie camp. I would say Ellington has a good shot of making the club if it were not for the likes of Luc Bourdon and Alex Edler.

In my opinion, Luc was not great in camp. He may have been saving he best for big boy camp, but my first impression of him so far this year is just like last. It looks like he needs another year.

Edler on the other hand looked really good. At 6'4, 220, he has monster reach and size. He used both very well in camp. He skates well for a big guy and appears to have an amazing ability to read plays. We'll see how he does in the main camp, but as of right now I pick Edler to make the team this year over Borudon and Ellington.

Some other players that stood out to me were Mason Raymond and Jannik Hansen, who are both lightening quick. Raymond was so fast in fact, that he caught a player who had a clear breakaway from centerline while Raymond was still at the blue line. It was really awesome to watch. Hansen will be a familiar name to 'Nucks fans as he played 10 games for them in the playoffs this past season. Both players distribute the puck well, play a solid two way game, but do not appear to have an abundance of scoring ability.

Cory Schneider looked really, really good. Unfortunately for Cory, it doesn't matter how good he plays. As long as Luongo is with the Canucks, he isn't.

Micheal Grabner, Vancouvers first rounder in 06, looked solid but did not really stand out. He put up good numbers last year with Spokane, 39-16-55 in 55 GP. At 19 years of age, he could use another year, or perhaps half a year to continue to develop his game.

Props to Garet Hunt of the Vancouver Giants who repeatedly tried to fight Bourdon on the last day of rookie camp. He was cut a few hours later.

I will be attending day one of training camp on Thursday at Bear Mountain arena in beautiful Victoria, BC. I will keep you all posted on any hoopla or happenings.

Cheers.

Thanks for the report. BTW, it's MASON RAYMOND, not Raymond Mason.
