Sorry Ek...No Game Seven

Posted Monday | Comments 0
Eklund has his airline ticket to Nashville for the Sharks and Preds game seven but the problem is there won't be a game seven. For the second year in a row the Preds were handed a 4 games to 1 series loss at the hands of the San Jose Sharks. Seriously...if I see anything teal right now I might just hurl! This was a physical series (some might even say dirty...but l...

Who Do I Love?

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
I love the NHL playoffs…I really do but I guess I’m a little preoccupied with the San Jose – Detroit series for a couple of reasons. The first being that San Jose just knocked us (the Preds) out in five games in round one. You get to know another team pretty well during a playoff series. I got to know, for better or worse, these Sharks really well during round one. ...
Even though it's still early, and there's still quite a few moves that need to be made-or should I say will be made-here's a quick look at a few guys that I see as being on the spot in Philly, and a few who might be gone.... On The Spot 5. Joffrey Lupul. Lupul is basically an offensive player. He doesn't play defense, isn't a great skater and doesn't use ...

Congratulations Mr.Bettman

Posted Monday | Comments 0
There have been few occasions over the last decade or so where Gary Bettman was the envy of the other major sports league's commissioners. This is one of them. League revenues are surging, players are being paid well and there is parity like we've rarely seen before. But most importantly there are no Barry Bonds, Mike Vicks or Tim Donaghys. Mr.Bettman doesn...
Not too much to say about last night's Flyers-Stars tilt in South Philadelphia, except that rookie Dennis Tolpeko was the only Flyer that seemed willing to give a full effort on every shift. Riley Cote also will likely be the fifth Flyer suspended this year, after leaving his feet to toss a high elbow with three minutes remaining. To his credit, Cote called the hit "st...
The offensive team is cycling the puck deep in the zone, the defenders are forced to react and hope for a miscue...the puck squirts free and the defender banks the puck off the side wall. From the minute the puck caroms off the boards, it looks questionable whether or not it will make it to the end line. [img]http://s228.photobucket.com/albums/ee162/JHRIV/th_Delayed_...

What numbers are the NHL using?

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
Can anyone recall exactly why the NHL decided to shut 'er down for a season? I think it had something to do with salaries spiraling out of control, attendance in lots of markets were down and owners were losing buckets of money. Fast forward to today. As of Feb. 7, 2008, only 11 of the 30 teams are averaging at (or above) arena capacity this season. 10 teams are av...

Masked Billboards

Posted Friday | Comments 0
Recently there’s been a lot of talk about having goaltenders wear special jerseys with advertisements on them. When I first heard this idea I reacted like most hockey fans did, my initial reaction was I’ll believe it when I see it. I assumed that this was just another one of the NHL’s brain dead ideas hoping to increase revenues. I couldn’t possible have seen the N...

Fire Someone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
The Flyers recent game is nearly over and quite frankly I don't really care to know if they win or lose. Yes, I would love for them to mount a comeback and I still have faith. But, what I don't have faith in is the coaching staff. Management yes but coaching staff no. I just don't understand how a team can come out so flat in the last 20 games of the season. They ...

Flyers Thoughts

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
A few thoughts have crossed my mind as I look at this team from the beginning of the year to now. First thing that sticks out is that I simply beleive the Flyers are still a year away to becoming a top team. I think they caught fire in stretches and it got all the Flyers Fans juiced up, thinking this would be the year of the Cup. Coming into this year, I simply was lo...

Umberger Has a Point...

RJ Umberger publicly vented a bit of frustration before game one in Washington on Friday. He commented about being put on the fourth line. "I don't know what he thinks because I haven't talked to him," Umberger said, referring to coach John Stevens. "Apparently, he doesn't think I'm good enough. I d...

Go Forth and Prospal

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
Look back at this year's trade deadline and some of the players who were moved. Hossa to Pittsburgh. Campbell to San Jose. Richards to Dallas. Huet and Federov to Washington. Cam Janssen to St. Louis (just kidding). How about if I told you that a minor move at the deadline that went well under the radar has had a bigger impact than any of those? The Flyers have ...
In what can only be described as an incredibly surprising move, Daryl Sutter has signed free agent forward Jamie Lundmark. Lundmark had spent parts of two seasons with the Flames, his first of which after being acquired in the deal with the Coyotes for a fourth round pick. He was expected to add depth to our forwards for a playoff run and add some scoring. He did ju...
Hope all the hockeyheads are enjoying the off-season... For Flyers fans looking for an update on their team's status, THN's Coach of the Year John Stevens will be on with Harry Mayes and Dan Schwartzman tonight on 950ESPN in Philadelphia... Camp Opens

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
Flyers training camp opened this morning. Two morning sessions here. We asked 5 questions for coach John Stevens coming into today Q- Looks like there are more ice time issues than spots to be won? A - We’ve got some new players, frankly, we don’t know much about. There are some opportunities up for grabs on our team for more ice time, more responsibility....
We're about a third of the way through the season, so I figure it's about time I should issue my opinions of the Flyers (version 2008-09). The Flyers are sitting at 13-7-6. They have points in 73% of games, but only 62% of possible points. They also lead the league in overtime games, a stat that is bad for both my blood pressure and the team's chances in April and May. ...

Thinking like a goalie...

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
After a positive response to my last blog, I figured I would take another crack at one. And I decided to pick a topic that was near and dear to my heart, goaltending. Many moons ago, (yes, MANY moons, Lisa), I used to be a decent puckstopper. I used to live for the feelings associated with stopping a breakaway, throwing up an unconventional two-pad stack, a rapid refl...
I am a US hockey fan, and I can not state emphatically enough that there is NO reason to "Make it Seven". It should be MAKE IT TEN Southern markets in the United States, despite some very vocal and passionate fans, are largely failures. The two teams in the state of Florida have had their successes, but have been in terrible financial straits and have seen far more d...

Okay many of us have spoken out in reference to Burrows and Auger and althoug Burrow should've have publicly stated his opinion, I still think it was the right course of action. Finally a player stated what everyone else (fans) thought in how a referee could have it out to a player. Its a darn shame the NHL chose to fine the player and not the ref. Oh well... Contrac...

Farewell to the Igloo

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
The days of the Penguins playing in the Igloo are numbered. 3 games for sure...1 in the regular season...beyond that, we won't know until we see what kind of playoff team we have this year. Tonight IS the last regular season game in the "old barn". Mellon Arena, formerly, the Civic Arena, has been around since 1961. In 1967 the Penguins started playing there, and ...

Stamkos Doing It All

Drafted 1st overall in the 2008 draft, Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos has quickly emerged as one of the league’s top performers. The talk has been all about Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby over the last few years, but now it is time to consider Stamkos as well. He’s too good to ignore. Stamkos has is proving that last year’s 51 goals was no fluk...

Lightning go up in Flames

Posted Wednesday | Comments 1
On a day in which Sylvester Stallone got elected into the boxing hall of fame (huh?) and Graham James gets out on bail(you have to be kidding me right?), the Calgary Flames climbed out of last place – at least for the time being. With the Oilers shootout loss, the Flames sit one point ahead of the junior high school misfits, but unfortunately the Flames have played o...

Leafs - Do or Die?

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
This summer will be a key time as the Toronto Maple Leafs strive to break a drought that has seen them absent from the past six consecutive post seasons. The farm has been rejuvenated with the likes of Greg McKegg, Jesse Blacker, Jake Gardiner and Joe Colborne joining top prospect Nazem Kadri. However, the Leafs remain without a number one play making center and are still ...

The Stamkos Fiasco

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
There are only two days until the Free Agency period begins and one of the most highly touted players in hockey is yet to be signed. Tonight at 5 pm ET marks the time where teams may begin negotiating with other clubs’ RFA’s, although offer sheets cannot be officially submitted until Friday. Until this week, I was extremely hesitant regarding the idea that Steven Stamk...
When Steven Stamkos rips his one-timer from the half boards, fans cheer; the puck is travelling so quickly that is always has a chance to score. Since his NHL career started, Stamkos has been labeled a bit of a one dimensional player by some. Well, this season, Stamkos is turning himself into an even strength force. Consider last season when 17 of Stamkos’ 45 goals ...
Since Sidney Crosby’s concussion and Alex Ovechkin’s fall from grace, the National Hockey League has been in dire need of a new star. The league needs a face that every fan can get excited about. What I’m about to argue will irk a lot of the hockey world. Obviously, as a Bolts fan, I’m a little bit biased. That said, I believe that Steven Stamkos is the most ma...
Have you ever wondered what it is like behind the scenes in the NHL? What would it be like to meet and interview the biggest stars in the NHL? I recently had the chance to find out as I had access to the NHL All-Star media event at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa during the All-Star weekend. Here is an account of my experiences with the biggest names in the NHL. As I walked ...
It feels like the Lightning fan base has to constantly come to the defense of its star players. After seeing the reaction to the Hart Trophy nominations, this week has been no exception. There was so much backlash towards Steven Stamkos for being nominated as “he didn’t lead the Lightning to the playoffs” – No, he didn’t. What did he do though? Well, not only did...

For the love of hockey...

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
The game of hockey that most Canadians and a few Americans love has been been sacrificed on the altar of big business. A kid dreams of getting to the NHL and would play for free but when he gets there, his agent tells him you can't play unless "you're getting more millions than some other guy who is not as good as you." The owners fall over themselves handing...

Coaching

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
Dallas Vancouver and the Rangers are in need of a coach. Here are my ideas on best fits. In Dallas I would look at Scott Arneil or Lindy Ruff. Arneil has potential as much as he had a not so great time in Columbus. I do believe though that he has what it takes and the Stars team is lacking so it could really show what he is made of. Lindy Ruff for the reason that I view Da...
There is no doubt that this year's playoffs have been a weird one. Eastern Conference favorites were bounced in consecutive rounds by a surprising Tampa Bay Lightning team. The Washington Capitals finally seemed like they were going to make it out of the second round again, only to lose three straight to the Rangers. Stanley Cup Champion goaltender Corey Crawford was ch...
Luke D It looks like Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Steven Stamkos is going to test free agency next year. Many teams will be in line to sign him and the Toronto Maple Leafs should be one of those teams for a good number of reasons. First of all, he is one of the best players in the NHL right now. Ever since his rookie year, he has taken the league by storm with three...
Is Steven Stamkos going to be a New York Islander come July 1st? Well if you have a copy of the latest NHL video game, then yes he will be. It's time to address this rumor going around in regards to the one who will be the top UFA this summer. Well, more like bury this rumor that for whatever reason won't go away. It began not long ago by Eklund, the annonyms one who r...
I think the Tampa Bay Lightning will re-sign Steven Stamkos. he's their best player in my opinion, and they can be a great team without him, but can they get past the Penguins in this series? I don't know.
One thing is for sure. July 1st in hockey season and the Rangers go together like peanut butter and jelly. The Rangers have always had a history of striking and landing the big fish on hockey's Christmas, Free Agency day one. This year is different. There is Steven Stamkos, a 26 year old franchise center on the market and he will have no shortage of teams looking to land ...
