In past seasons Dallas' main need has always been a goal scoring winger. Last season Ryan Smyth would have been a perfect fit. In July Ryan Smyth would have been a perfect fit also, but that is another blog for another time. Right now Dallas sits 5th in goals for. Dallas also sits 6th in goals against. You can rule those Marty Turco for Martin St. Louis rumors ...
We are approaching the draft which means many people are anticipating a bunch of trades , and major trades at that so I decided to add my two cents to the things going around. First off - The Toronto Maple leafs should not and I highly doubt they will trade for the likes of Malkin, Gaborik or Olli. Why? They need to REBUILD! And while the argument can be made t...
IF the Canucks had to trade their 10th overall to get a big player in return would you do it? If it meant the Canucks getting Jokinen should we do it? With Nonis locking up all our big trade bait players to NTC it might just have to be a center piece of a big trade. The big question is would you rather have one of the top ten kids in this draft or have Olli Jokinen?...
"At Syracuse, they teach quarterbacks to protect the ball deep in their own end zone!" Fifteen minutes into my run on the treadmill at the local gym, I was busy trash-talking Tony Romo. The Eagles were closing on the Cowboys in the second quarter of their Monday night game. Away from Philadelphia for twenty years, I now live in Seattle. This isn't really a sports t...
Burke Gets His Guys The first big moves of the trading season have been made and is it really any surprise that Toronto GM Brian Burke was at the forefront? Burke, perhaps feeling additional pressure to improve the Leafs’ position in the standings because of the inclusion of this year’s 1st round pick that they so generously bequeathed upon Boston for the rig...
Today I will look at the Rangers in free agency as it pertains to their own guys. Here’s a break down of several of the Blue Shirts top UFA’s and RFA’s. I’ve included last year’s stats, salary and free agency status along with arguments for and against retaining the player plus my final take on the situation. In no particular order here we go. Vinny Prospal ...

Moustache Man

I don't know if anybody else heard it yesterday... a loud and resonant “WTF???"(Why the face?) emanating from the general Flames fan-wagon. I heard it echo from my living room moments after passing my lips also, but the more I think about it, the more I agree with the move. Sure, Olli Jokinen was overpaid and “underperformed” last year for the Flames, and I still w...

Welcome to bizarro world

The Flames gave notice when they waived Kotalik that losing was no longer an option. But in a somewhat surprise move, they put Nigel Dawes on waivers. The Flames inform the media that his contract would be bought out if there was no claim. This move really confused me. Why waste someone with 14 goals? If he would have played full time, he would have scored 20 goals. ...

Olli Jokinen: Here we go again

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
With the news that Olli Jokinen has suffered a minor injury in last night’s pre-season tilt with the Phoenix Coyotes, I thought it was time to look deeper into the man they call the Joker. If you read my column, and I believe there is maybe one person out there who does (Hi Dad!), you know I have never, how can I best put it, enjoyed having Olli Jokinen troll the ice ...

Pre-Season

The season is upon us. In 12 hours time, the puck will be dropped to kick off the 2010-11 season for the flames. This pre-season has been both a good and a bad one for the flames even though they end it with a perfect 7-0 record. Positives - TJ Brodie He was considered to be one of the better defense prospects for the team, but was also considered to be a year or t...

In the history of the Hart Trophy, presented to the MVP of the National Hockey League, there are only 3 players who have won the award who are not presently inducted into the Hall of Fame. One is Eric Lindros, a bubble player who could find himself enshrined amongst the greats of the game. Another is Tommy Anderson. Given that he was a defenseman of the 30s and 40s who jus...
Jokinen's time with the Flames has been strange to say the least. With his contract set to expire at season's end, I look at how we got here and what to do with the Flames number one center. http://west.thecheckingline.com/blog/newman/calgary-flames/olli-olli-oxen-free Newman
The Calgary Flames lost their fifth game in a row on Saturday afternoon in Dallas 4-1. The season is all but over. What's the problem though and why did they go on this slide? In my opinion, it's a losing mentality that's ingrained in the dressing room starting with the coach. Read more here: http://west.thecheckingline.com/blog/derrick-newman/calgary-flames...
