Traditionally, sports in Ohio are generally regarded as mediocre. However this year I feel there is an excitement for Ohio sports that has not been around for a long time. Here is what has been happening:
-Last night, the Cleveland Indians defeated the New York Yankees 6-4 to move on to the AL Championship Series. The Indians haven't won a World Series in almost 60 years.
-The Cleveland Cavaliers made it to the NBA Finals last season, but lost. They have never won an NBA title.
-The Cleveland Browns look like a whole new football team (yes, I know they are 2-3, but they will probably be 5-3 in a few weeks). They aren't getting stomped on every game, and they even beat the Ravens. The Browns have never won a Superbowl.
-The Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked #3 in the NCAA for football (I am still upset Purdue didn't win last weekend. I'm a student there, I went to the game expecting a competitive game and I'm disappointed). Ohio State hasn't won a national title since 2002.
So what about the Blue Jackets?
The Blue Jackets need to carry this sports momentum that the other northern Ohio sports have. Just knowing that Rick Nash had a 4-point game last Friday makes me feel there is hope for the Jackets to contend this season. mes this season. If the Jackets do well, and make the playoffs, they will be contributing to maybe one of the best sports years Ohio has had in recent memory.
