Fantasy Hockey: New Studs on the Block

With the NHL season into its third week it is safe to say the pace has quickened and players point totals are starting to rack up. There are some new young faces that are going to be leading fantasy teams to the promise land this season. With the way the new NHL is structured it is important for teams to integrate good young talent into their line-up. Getting production out of up and coming players is key to keeping down the cap and jetting up the standings. This new structure has all fantasy players across the country itching to add that next break out player onto their team. To do well this season in all formats it’s going to be important to fill those last three forward sports with players that are going to up their point totals from last season. Here are a few young studs that are hoping to have big campaigns.
Rene Bourque Cgy. RW. 6G 1A +2 +/- 4PIM
Rene has already started to light the lamp this season, he has tallied 3 GWG’s and 7 points in 6 games played. Bourque has always had this potential; he has a hard to find mix of speed, size and offensive gifts. Rene has also been able to up his point totals from 40 in 2008/2009 to 58 in 2009/2010. With a self admitted new found confidence there are people speculating that he will eventually surpass the other right wingers on the Flames roster in the not so distant future. This is especially flattering to Bourque because one of the other right wingers on the team has the name Iginla sewn on the back of his jersey. Look for this Flames right winger to get up into the 70 point range this season on his way to becoming a real force for Calgary.
Chris Stewart Col. RW. 5G 5A 10P -3 +/- 21PIM
Stewart has already been busy this season, with the new youth movement in Colorado he is looking to remain a solid scoring threat every time he laces them up. He has put up 10 points in 8 games, while inking a new contract to remain with the Av’s for at least another 2 seasons. Stewart had a impressive 64 points last season while earning the honour of being the top goal producer on a team jammed full of young talent. With the Avalanche brass having the confidence to extend his contract, it would be a good idea to find a way to get him on your fantasy team. Look for this Av’s right winger to continue to impress and move into the 70 point range for this season.
Nathan Horton Bos. RW. 5G 4A 9P +/- +3 0PIM
Horton has been thought of as a good young player for a while; he was a solid point getter while in Florida but was never able to get up into the top ranks of the forwards in the NHL. Now with a change of scenery Horton seems to be finding ways to get it done early on. He has found some good chemistry with line mates David Krejci and Milan Lucic, look for his point totals from last year (54) to get up into the 70 point range.
