Yesterday Spector stated that several teams were at the Oilers game presumably scouting out Oilers players. Assuming that’s the case, the teams being mentioned were the Wild, Lightening, Kings, Bruins, and Coyotes... Here are some potential deals that could be on the table.

Los Angeles Kings

Wayne Simmonds $0.8M + 1st Round Pick (current offer)
For
Ales Hemsky $4.1M

Well this one has apparently been put on the table from the Kings. Since it seems likely that it will either be Boston or LA that will get Hemsky, its really going to come down to the following for LA…

LA wins if they offer Schenn and Simmonds and the Oilers make it Hemsky + something to soften the pain.

Boston Bruins

Blake Wheeler @ $2.2M (RFA this year) + Boston’s 1st round pick (likely current offer)
For
Ales Hemsky @ $4.1M

Considering the bruins are 6th best on offense, 4th best on defense, and 1st in goaltending I am surprised they are tweaking… But, since Recci and Ryder are both UFA at the end of the year, it probably makes sense to replace Marc Savards playmaking on the wing now and backfill with Colbourne or Seguin (sadly I doubt Savard ever returns).

The Bruins aren’t going to want touch their core roster if they don’t have to so if Boston wants to win the Hemsky sweepstakes, it’s going to take one of either the TO 1st round pick, Seguin, or Colbourne (likely in that order).

Ultimately I think Boston wins the Hemmer sweepstakes because Hemsky helps them with their cup run immediately and Boston trading TO`s pick hardly mortgages the future (unlike LA).

Minnesota Wild

Cam Barker @ $3.08M x 3 years (RFA at the end)
For
Ladi Smid @ $1.3M x 2 years (RFA at the end)

Minnesota has some big troubles at the moment… currently they are up against the cap with 0.5 million in available cap space. Their top line consists of Brunette (UFA this year), Koivu (locked in), and Miettnen (UFA this year). The wild would love to get some of the Oilers Wingers but what do they have to give in return? Not much compared to the likes of Boston, LA, or Atlanta…

So why the Barker for Smid deal? Both of them might do better with a change of scenery (both at -11) and I am sure Minnesota would love to gain close to 2 million in cap wiggle room that this deal would provide. Oilers get a player that thrived in Chicago and might be able to regain his touch with more ice time (Smid is rolling around 19:29 minutes per game).

Tampa Bay Lightening

2nd round pick
For
Jim Vandermeer @ $2.3M x 1 year (RFA at the end)

While Tampa’s forwards continue to roll with Lecavallier starting to produce, their defense and goaltending remain suspect heading into the trade deadline, ranking 24th in the league in goals against. Since Yzerman just added Dwayne Roloson, you would have to think they aren’t at the game scouting out Khabibulin… So unless we are going to see Gilbert for Ohlund, don’t be shocked to see Vandermeer showing up with Tampa, rental / insurance style.

Phoenix Coyotes

Here is the fun one that has no chance of happening… I am not sure why Phoenix would be sniffing around so I thought I would sniff what they might be

Oliver Lars-Ekman @ 1.5m x 3 (RFA at the end)
Vernon Fiddler @ 1.1M (UFA this year)
For
Sam Gagner @ 2.275M x 3 (RFA)
Marcinin

Phoenix in the end could use a play making 2nd line center that can play with Wolski and Doan as both centers Fiddler and Belanger are UFA at the end of this campaign. Phoenix’s D is fairly good and with Brandon Gormley in the system, maybe they part with smooth skating Lars-Ekman…

Naw they won’t, but I needed something for Phoenix

Gotta love trade time. Its got all the excitement that xmas used to have as a kid... if your parents end up getting you the Xbox, you will love it all summer. If they get you the sweater, let the hate and complaining ensue.

Here is hoping Tambi doesn't like knitting...

Yikes. Pipe dreams. All deals HEAVILY favor Edm. Boston is looking to deal Wheeler to FREE cap space, not take on more. Vandermeer would get a 5th at best (use Mara to compare, who's a better D) and you'll be lucky to get a 1st for Hemsky let alone a 1st AND Simmonds. And, I don't really know what you'd benefit in the Phx deal... makes no sense.

Vandermeer for a 2nd round pick?? come on I know you Oilers fans having nothing to talk about these days then trades, but come on! This guy has bounced around from team to team so much in the last 4 years. There is a reason for that! No way you get a 2nd rounder for this guy. 4th if you are lucky!

The price for Hemsky has been set by previous trades (Fisher a 1st and 3rd, possibly 2nd). A first rounder and a player/prospect is what is it will take to get a player like Hemsky. That's why Tamby can't stop smiling.

Good comments from everyone... Just to add a comment about the value of Hemsky. If the league had a do over, for sure Hemsky isn't sitting at the value he is getting today. However, that doesn't matter.Value is determined by supply and demand. And I might be wrong but how many 60 pt playmaking wingers are available that have 1 year left on an affordable $4M contract?

Oh and if this stuff about Kaberle going for a late round first pick plus a 3rd line forward is true, then you still think Hemksy isn't worth at least that?

Iggymvp: Umm..coming from a fan of a team that gave us a third round pick and Aaron Johnson for Steve Staios, that's pretty big talk.Deimos678: Wolski hasn't played for the Coyotes for a looooong time... Boston would need to throw much more than Blake Wheeler and a late first round for Hemsky...Hemsky, Cogs and a 2nd round pick for Simmonds and Schenn might be interesting...And Smid for Barker makes no sense whatsoever.

JephC D Sutter is up in Viking waiting to take over for Tamber. Yzerman aint Sutter. There arent anymore dummies that would have done that Staois deal nor a 2nd for Vandermeer, cmon!!

Wow a lot of people undervalue Hemsky. The guy is a 90 point player with talent around him. However, Vandemeer for a 2nd is LAUGHABLE. He is worth a 5th on a good day and more realistically a 7th.

The only deal I would take out of those hypotheticals is Barker for Smid straight up. Hell I'd even throw in a late round pick to get Barker to Edmonton..

You didn't spend too much time thinking on this before you wrote it, eh?Not a snowball's chance in the desert does Phoenix trade OEL for Gagner. On top of that you suggest they trade Fiddler as well.OEL would cost you Hall.
