New blogger trying out the stuff. I'm a huge hockey fan and I may have some insight that could be interesting to some readers. Lets go to work.
The Ottawa Senators are in action tonight against the Florida Panthers. Two teams who have really poop the bed this season, it looks to be a great one...
Pfff.
Its hard to come by a Senators player who hasn't been mentioned in trade rumours this season, or one who doesn't deserve the tag "underacheiving" or "disappointing", let alone been given one of those at some point this season. One could argue that Erik Karlsson has been a bright spot in the 2010/11 season. While few people will deny he has a legitimate future in the NHL as a top 4 D-man, we Sens fans, desperate for anything positive, are quick to forget his brutally slow start to the season, or his team worst -28. Ouch.
Trade rumours have run rampant in Ottawa this season, for good reason. Mike Fisher is gone, Chris Kelly is gone, Brian Elliott is gone, and Jarkko Ruutu is gone. Thank god for the last two. Elliott at this point in time, looks like there is no way he becomes a legitimate #1 goaltender. A 1a type keeper is a reasonable belief for him, and in Colorado it should be a toss up between he and Peter Budaj for the starts. Picks are nice to get back, and we got more than I thought we would in the Fisher trade. Kelly for a second could look to be a good trade as well, though Chris was shaping out to be one of our better players this season. Anderson still hasn't been scored on in a Sens uniform, to this point in time, fingers crossed.
Going into the trade deadline, it looks like its shaping our to be one of the most boring ones in recent history. Doubtless you've heard this in many blogs, but most of the trading has already been done. That being said, Ottawa currently holds on to some of the biggest trading chps in the market. Chris Phuillips, despite the recent thoughts that he'll resign here, is going to be traded. A first and a prospect seems like a rational return for the guy, given the current market. He doesn't have the value of a Thomas Kaberle, but Big Rig for Washington Capitals pick and a young, NHL ready (or almost) minor leaguer? It makes sense to me. And of course the almost NHL ready player would fit right in on Ottawa's current roster.
Speaking of which, if there any reason why the Sens should toss up a claim for Nikolai Zherdev? He'd instantly be the team's leading goal scorer (pretty pathetic eh?) and it would provide someone to step in and take a roster spot up when Alex Kovalev is traded for whatever Murray can get for him.
Speaking of awhich, what does Zherdev's waiving mean for the Kovalev trade front? Zherdev is considered to be a young, cheap version of Alex Kovalev. I see no reason why Philly would search the rade market to see if they could get a return on Zherdev, so if he gets nothing (with a higher goal production in less minutes), what hope does Kovy have? At this point in time, I'd take almost anything for Kovalev, despite his recent success. If the Sens can get a pick in the top 100 of the 2011 draft for this guy, I'll be impressed with Murray. If it weren't for his recent play, Kovalev would be right up there with Wade Redden and Sheldon Souray for the "get-him-the-hell-off-our-team" award.
I hope to god Landeskog or Couturier come in here next season and clean this mess up. Imagining Landeskog plowing Dion Phaneuf and the puck into Toronto's net while donning a Sens jersey is the only thing that keeps me going through the 10-game losing streaks.
