With GM meetings underway in Florida this week, the main concern around the league right now is headshots and the growing rate of concussions. My personal opinion on this hot topic is the league should have a no tolerance policy and the player should be handed a heavy fine plus a minimum of 7 game suspension. Along with the player being punishied I believe the team should also get fined. If the league takes this route I believe it will show teams that the league means business and are not playing around. Too many players are getting seriously injured or career ending concussions due to headshots and we need to put a stop to this. Like the Chara hit for example I believe it was a clean hit yes, but no matter how fast the game is I don't care who you are, you know exactly where you are at all on the ice. So I believe Chara should have got fined because that would of set a standard for the rest of the league that no matter if your a superstar or not we will still suspend a player. A headshot rule should have came in effect a long time ago and we would not be discussing this topic now, Gary Bettman needs to wakeup and smell the coffee and crack down on this growing problem.
Anyone agree with me?
Brad
What happens when there is inadvertent head contact happens, like say when a big player hits a smaller guy? Or when a guy who is 6'4" has his head down and gets hit by a shorter player, like what happened when Scott Stevens caught Eric Lindros? If it's made a strict black and white rule, there will be guys punished for things out of their control.
Good thinking brad! truely bloggers are the smartest people on earth. What we need to do is make the players afraid to make a hit, that'l soften things up when we REMOVE HITTING FROM HOCKEY INTIRELY, what we can do then is plant grass instead of ice, use a ball instead of a puck and make the nets 40 feet square and bingo bango you got a winning game. Lets make it soccer, no toughness no physicallity, just boring stick control and diving is all you need, your welcome sidney crosby
Nobodys saying take hitting out of hockey, but what I am saying is get the headshots out. Players need to be held accoutable for there actions, we are losing to many key players due to concussions, if the league cracks down on this it will be a much safe and enjoyable game for all. When younger kids look up to certain players and they see a headshot then they think that is right. Hockey is a fast game and players are getting bigger so they just need to be more aware. Thank You for your comment, Brad
Maybe its a matter of tweaking the equipment or something but we need to hold players accoutable. Whats your suggestion then bigtimeleafs? Leave as is and keep watching players get seriously hurt?
