I believe I picked the right day to start my blogging adventure...yesterday at about 2:00, I went onto Hockeybuzz to look if any trade rumors concerned the Flyers. The only rumor I saw was Robyn Regher possibly waiving his NTC to go to Buffalo. Thinking nothing will happen in the next 20 minutes (Who would've thought something did happen?) I go to get cleaned up for the day.
I come back to find Jeff Carter has been traded to The Columbus Blue Jackets, which I think will come off as a good move in the long run, due to his lack of good play in the playoffs (47 GP, 21 PTS). He will surely be missed for his touch in the offensive zone, but part of that production I think can be filled by 21-year old Jakub Voracek, who was acquired in this deal along with the 8th overall pick in this years draft (Sean Couturier) and a third round pick in this years draft. Now to Voracek, due to his age he could still be considered a project for the Flyers, despite his 3-years of experience in the NHL. In each of his seasons with the Blue Jackets he has put up 30+ assists (29 in 08-09), and things can only be looking up with possible new linemates in Danny Briere, JVR, or Claude Giroux.
Now to the 8th overall pick in the 2011 Entry Draft...Sean Couturier, many people thought at the beginning of the year he could be at the top of the draft along with 4th pick Adam Larsson (Devils), but his stock fell due to a bout of mono early in the year. He reminds me of JVR due to his size and ability to play in the defensive zone. I hope management gives him an oppourtunity to make the club in September.
The other deal that went down caught me by complete surprise. They traded captain Mike Richards to the LA Kings for Wingers Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds, and a 2nd round pick for 2012.
More to come on that trade for a later date.
