While the
Islanders made a move. They traded for the
rights to Christain Ehrhoff's contract. Ehrhoff is fresh off of a run to the Stanley Cup Finals with the Vancouver Canucks and the 28 year old Defenseman will be an
UFA on the First of July. The Isles received these rights after giving up their
fourth round pick in the
2012 draft to the Nucks.
This gamble is just that for the Isles. All this means is that they have a few days more than any other team to work out a contract with Ehrhoff. If Ehrhoff has no interest in playing for the Isles (and no one would blame him if he didn't) on
July 1 he is free to discuss contracts with any of the other 29 NHL teams.
It is impossible to say whether or not Ehrhoff will end up and Islander, and if he does sign in Long Island, this trade will be seen as genius. However, this trade could quickly backfire and the Isles could see a draft pick go out the window if Ehrhoff declines to join the Islanders.
This leads us to the big questions: Was this the right move by Garth Snow? Was this risk worth the possible reward? Are the Isles finally going to acquire a big name FA or will they once again have a quiet off season?
This is very little risk for the Isles. A 4th round pick is not much to give up for the rights to try and convince a FA to sign here.. It gives them 3 days to show him what Long Island is really like and to get acquainted with some of the players. And really do you need to take the easy shot at the Isles? From a team with one of the best records for the last 15 years, a brand new arena and you still can't sell out a rivalry game against the Rangers or the first round of the playoffs?
Yeah seriously. The shots against the Islanders are so 2005. They're back, and it'd be nice if I could read one Islander post without a backhanded comment directed towards them or Long Island (which happens to be my home).
I'm a Shark fan but, I lived on the Island (Northport) for many years. Went to several Islanders games and love the Islanders. Ehrhoff was once a Shark. Would love to have him back as a Shark. But, good luck to the Islanders getting him signed. About time good things happen on the island!
A "Blogger" who has there writing published on a site like this should not be taking shots at other teams. If you read the other bloggers who have the privilage to have there work posted on this site..... They don't take shots at other teams or players.......REALITY CHECK!! MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO BLOG SOMEWHERE ELSE!!
If the Devils could convince Ehrhoff to sign for less, I'd be all for him coming to NJ. I know that's a pipe dream though, seeing the Devils won't have a ton of cap left after Parise's resigned and we'd still need to resign other players as well.
