Steve Yzerman has continued his trade tirade today with moves sending Steve Downie to Colorado in exchange for Kyle Quincey, only to send Quincy to Detroit in exchange for Detroit’s 2012 first round draft pick and Sebastien Piche. Yzerman was not finished there; he then sent forward Matt Fornataro to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Brandon Segal. Here are some quick thoughts on each trade prior to puck drop tonight.

I've been hearing people say what a terrible GM Yzerman is with the things he's done up till now. Well, he spent all those years in Detroit as a player, but all the while watching and learning how to run a team. He learned from two of the best, Ken Holland and Jim Nill and now he's putting his knowledge to work. You fans in TB, just wait, Yzerman is using the Wings as a model for what he's going to do in your town. Good things and good times are coming Lightning fans. Just be patient. You will be rewarded.
That's a heck of an impressive move turning Downie into a first round pick.
Curious as to why SY wouldn't just hold on to Quincey? He'd be an upgrade over Kubina and a late 1st Rd pick wouldn't be helping the team for at a couple years. Anyone else think this isn't the last move to finalize this trade?
He's stock piling picks to trade for a goalie
Stockpiling for a goalie. Precisely that, GoBoltss61.
Who is dumb enough to call Yzerman a bad GM? I am VERY excited at what hes doing. Goodbye mr. Penalty magnet, hello Andrei Vasilevski!
It was time for Downie to go. Good move by Yzerman.
Correct me if I am wrong, but everyone is saying this will be a 30th pick we got? Wouldn't it be based on were Detroit finishes in the playoffs and NOT the regular season? In that case I hope for a quick exit.
Assessing SFY with barely 2 seasons behind us(and Bolts may actually win a playoff berth depending on Jets games this weekend)is unfair. Saying he is "great" or "bad"(ala Mathew Barry)is premature. The expectation was and will be very high because he is SFY so lets put this in context.
Our 2 first rounders could be Griffin Reinhart and Andrei Vasilevski and I would be ok with that.
smd4339, I totally agree with your post. I have seen on a few other message boards where people, not neccessarily Bolt fans, raking Stevie Y over the coals for some of the moves and non-moves he's made and calling him the worst GM in the league.
I don't like Detroit, but there model for a successful hockey club is second to none and if it takes a few years for mr. Yzerman to accomplish it then so be it. I would rather compete year in and year out, not just for the playoffs, but the Stanley cup like Detroit does and if we miss a couple year then well so be it.
