The Stanley Cup finals are upon us but I don't really care about it. Whether the Los Angeles Kings or the New Jersey Devils win, I could care less. I'm more interested in what's going to happen at the draft. Not too long ago a rumor surfaced that the Edmonton Oilers were entertaining the idea of trading the 1st overall pick to Columbus in a package deal including the 2nd overall pick. But I have a better idea…
I think this year's draft isn't really a deep nor great one and if I were the GM of the oilers I would continue trading down and obtaining upgrades on my current roster. Below are some trade ideas that I think would be fair to contemplate if Steve Tambellini was dumb enough to deal the first overall pick in this year's NHL Entry Draft..
Trading with columbus would involve the 2nd overall pick and another asset. I believe that the Blue Jackets won't want to part with Jack Johnson, Marc Methot, James Wisniewski, or Ilya Nikulin but a player that surprised many was Nikita Nikitin. He's a solid two way defenseman that had some success on the Columbus power play. He'd be an upgrade on Potter/Peckham/Sutton. He brings more offense that Smid and he hits more than Petry.
At this point, I know that Brian Burke wants to move up in the draft and he has a few assets that he's be willing to move to get to no.2. The players I would be targeting from the Toronto Maple Leafs would be James Reimer, Luke Schenn, Nikolai Kulemin, and the 5th overall pick. I think Schenn, Reimer and the 5th overall pick for the 2nd overall and Khabibulin. Brian Burke would need to make room for Roberto Luongo by moving Reimer. Jonas Gustavsson isn't coming back and It's probably too early to make Toronto Marlies playoff hero, Ben Scrivens, the no.1 but he would be a good back-up. Schenn needs out and joining a young team in Edmonton could be an excellent remedy to his troubles. A Reimer/Dubnyk tandem in Edmonton would certainly tide everyone by for the time being, also giving WHL Goalie of the Year, Tyler Bunz, some time to marinate in Oklahoma City. Taking Khabibulin is the key to the deal, Burkie has no problems burying him in the minors with Jeff Finger and Co. This is a really far fetched idea but has an element of realism to it.
Now, we could stop here and be very happy with the additions of Nikitin, Schenn, Reimer, and the 5th overall pick. We'd have shored up the defense and goaltending. Here we could select a number of excellent prospects including Matt Dumba, Morgan Reilly, Teuro Teravainen, or Griffin Reinhart. Of course assuming that Yakupov, Galchenyuk, Grigorenko, Forsberg, and Ryan Murray are taken. If not, even better for the Oilers.
I think that the consensus, if we're picking around the 5th-9th is to draft Griffin Reinhart but the Oilers do not have a pure offensive defenseman in their cupboard of prospects and I'd be partial to drafting Morgan Reilly here OR if one was worried about losing out on Yakupov, Edmonton could select Teravainen. I love Dumba but from recent draft rankings, I think that he's losing his shine a bit.
The last thing I'd like to say is that I'm getting tired of hearing that Ryan Murray should be the guy the oilers take because he is the most "NHL-Ready". That doesn't mean he's the best option. And seriously, the Oilers have a ton of contracts on their books right now. It's probably time to start releasing some guys or start making some deals to make the team better.
