Hello readers!
Well, today is the day that the Montreal Canadiens officially reclaimed a HUGE part of their heritage. With the hiring of Martin Lapointe, Sylvain Lefebvre and Patrice Brisebois, General Manager Marc Bergevin has managed to not only instill some pride back into the Montreal organization, but he also has made the Canadiens attractive to potential free agents both this year and in the future.
These moves undeniably signal to all that Bergevin intends to have a much more significant francophone presence in Montreal. The question now is will this new direction translate on the ice. What moves (player personnel-wise) can he make to bring in more homegrown talent? Allow me to be the first to dare to suggest that now is the right time to bring Vincent Lecavalier back to the province of Quebec. Afterall, he is no longer the "face" of the Tampa Bay Lightning and is far too expensive to have as a second line centreman. The outcome that a move like this would bring cannot even be measured. In my eyes, it would immediately bring credibility back to Les Habitants (and for you naysayers don’t say it can’t/won’t happen….a few years back it was a done deal until a former Tampa owner squashed it!).
The question then is what would it take to get a deal like this done. Well…..here is a suggestion. Montreal would trade Plekanec, Gomez and the 2nd rounder in this year’s draft for Lecavalier and Malone. This is essentially money for money and I believe it works cap-wise. Tampa can then do what they will with Gomez. This gives Montreal a nice 1-2 punch down the centre with Lecavalier and Desharnais.
As far as the free agent market goes, there are players like P.A. Parenteau and Steve Bernier that are options for Bergevin to consider. And what about Ribiero…is it worth giving him a second chance like they did with Therrien? Also, as quick as many will be to dismiss the notion of Parise as someone that could sign with Montreal, I certainly don’t as he is of francophone heritage (his dad, J.P. Parise, was a prolific French-Canadian scorer in his day). Alright, that’s a bit weak but you never know.
Obviously nobody really knows what Marc Bergevin’s mandate going forward is, but here’s hoping that he does. That would be a nice change from the past few years.
These are just some of my thoughts that I wanted to share in my first blog here on MyHockeyBuzz.
Cheers to all and thanks for reading!
Lecavalier? Have a poutine, a Pepsi, a May West and STFU. Habs hired some frenchies, plan the parade. Hon, Hon, Hon.
I would love to see Lecavalier in a Habs jersey but I really doubt that's going to happen! If we can move Gomez that would be a huge step in the right direction!
Gomez???? That is essentially Plekanic and a no 2 for two top 6 forwards in Lecavalier and Malone. What are you smoking? Who wants Gomez? Let Bergevin do what he wants with Gomez. Don't expect the Bolts to take out his trash. How about Subban and Price for Lecavalier and Malone?
DaoustNat....not smokin' anything thanks. Lecavalier is nowhere near the player he was when he signed that massive contract. He has been injury-prone and is lucky if he hits 60 points.
Continued.....He would fit in Montreal simply because he is francophone and his acquisition would be a marketing bonanza for the Habs. Gomez fits in this trade for the money-for-money aspect. He has 2 years left...Tampa could easily absorb that knowing that they would have some serious cap space coming up and he could fill the 3rd line centre role.
Continued.....Plekanec is the perfect fit as a second line centre behind Stamkos. So…….. the trade is Plekanec and Gomez for Lecavalier and a 2nd rounder for Malone. That's a deal that is reasonable and it makes sense (for both teams).
Continued.......As far as takin' out the trash goes.......I think (with all due to respect to Lecavalier) Montreal would be takin' on some of Tampa's trash. That contract was outrageous...even now! As far as Subban/Price for Lecavalier/Malone.....now who's smokin' something??? ;-)
Hey, the bottom line is Montral is going to have to buy out Gomez themselves. No one else is going to give any value for him to do that.
MadManPaddy ... continued.... continued.... continued...., you continue to sound like a hockey fan that is lost and has no idea what he is saying.
