As most people have heard by now, Paul Kariya is going to be testing the free agent waters starting July 1st according to Nashville Predators GM David Poile. "He's definitely going into free agency and it's certainly looking doubtful based on our conversations and the uncertainty of our franchise that he'll be coming back here," Poile announced Thursday.
The Vancouver Canucks simply do not have the cap space to sign Kariya right off the bat, but recent rumors suggest that something big may be in the works. According to Eklund, Vancouver is one of three rumored destinations for the 37 year old veteran and while Washington and Dallas may be able to offer Kariya a larger sum of money it doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll want to play there. Vancouver Canucks GM Dave Nonis now has to analyze the situation and see if he can clear up some cap space to sign Karyia by possibly getting rid of some last season’s underachievers like Mattias Ohlund and Brendan Morrison.
It will be interesting to see where the speedy winger will go in the coming weeks, will he end up in Washington or Dallas, engage in further negotiations with the Predators, or maybe he’ll come back to the city where it all started, Vancouver.
I wish Kariya had come here during the Burke era - he would have flourished. I'm just not so sure now. We don't have the fowards to provide the support he needs and unless Nonis does pull of a big deal I'd worry that PK would suffer the same way Naslund did last year.
Paul still has alot of hockey left in his legs whoever lands him will be happy to have him. Rumor has it he turned down two years at 4.5 each here with Nashville. Not sure if he is wanting that much more money or if he is uneasy with the current state of affairs here.
I would pass on paul kariya in vancouver, unless it's 2 years for 5-6M... he doesn't fit our style of play...
What Vancouver needs is a power forward who can make plays and create space for Naslund. He misses Bertuzzi, but Bert belongs anywhere else but here. Who's big, tough and fast and can make plays?
