This offseason, by all accounts, since the draft has been a quiet one for the Penguins. They made a blockbuster trade sending Jordan Staal to Carolina for Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin and the 8th overall pick, which they then used to draft Derrick Pouliot.
But now, business has seemingly slowed up and Ray Shero and the Penguins are in the midst of a waiting game with free agent winger Shane Doan. Doan is a big bodied who plays like a much younger player at times. He hits, scores, and leads extremely well. He is a player that many teams would love to have on their roster, including his current team the Pheonix Coyotes. The Penguins, like a few other teams waited on Zach Parise and Ryan Suter earlier in the offseason only to be let down when the two both packed their bags for Minnesota. For the money spent on the two players that may prove to be fine for the Penguins. However Doan's situation is far different. He is not just waiting to see which offer suits him best. He is waiting on solid ownership to stand on. Up until now the club has been controlled by the NHL.
If Doan does not feel any comfort in the way things will be handed over to the new ownership for the Coyotes, it has been said he will leave his one and only team. All of this seems great for the Penguins, and all the other interested teams. The other issue that comes into play is price. Doan is rumored to be asking for a 4 year $30 million contract if he is to leave Pheonix. The Penguins have cap space, so paying that money to any player can be done, but is it smart? Is it a wise decision to pay a 35 year old player, even with his skill set and ability $30 million? Is it wise to pay him any amount over the life of a contract that will have him at nearly 40 years old when it ends?
I say no. I assume that if you are reading this, so do you. Ray Shero has been relatively shrewd with his moves as the Penguins GM and I hope that he continues that trend. There are rumors that the Penguins have offered a contract to Doan. Based on Shero's history I imagine it is a fair deal considering Doan's age and ability. There are also rumors that the Penguins are prepared to offer Doan a 4 year $24 million deal. For the sake of the team, and future contracts of players such as Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, I hope the rumors are false. I assume you do too.
A 4 year $24 million deal would've been better for Semin. I don't understand the lack of interest around him.
Work ethic is a big deal for him. A lot of GMs were hesitant to offer anything long term. He is getting PAID though with his 1 year $7 million deal with Carolina
