While watching Hockey Night In Canada last weekend on CBC, the broadcast mentioned that the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia are exactly 10 months away. The first thought that popped into my head and most likely any Canadian hockey fan, was memories of the 2010 Olympics in which Sidney Crosby took a feed from Jarome Iginla in OT of the gold medal game and beat Ryan Miller for what will be forever known as "the golden goal".
The goal cemented Sidney Crosby as the face of hockey across the international hockey community. The images of him whipping his gloves into the air and waving that massive Canadian flag will be forever instilled into the minds of Canadians everywhere.
Once I finished reminiscing on the great hockey that was played at the Vancouver games, I immediately began to ask myself "What is the 2014 Canadian men's ice hockey team going to look like?"
Here's my rendition of what I think the roster will shape up like.
Stamkos - Crosby - Giroux
Neal - Tavares - Toews
Nash - E. Staal - Perry
J. Staal - Bergeron - Eberle
Getzlaf - Hall
Letang - Subban
Seabrook - Keith
Doughty - Weber
Pietrangelo
Price
Fleury
Smith
There will always be arguments as to why a certain player wasn't chosen or even why a certain player was chosen. Stars fans reading this are probably asking where's Benn? Oilers fans are probably asking where's Schultz? Jets fans will ask where's Kane? Leafs fans will ask where's Phaneuf? Die hard Flames fans (like myself) will ask where's Iggy?....and so on and so forth. The truth of the matter is, Canada could easily ice 2 if not 3 very competitive teams at any international hockey event. When you can only chose 1 team there are always going to be players left off the roster that would be an elite talent on any other team.
I will follow this blog post up with an additional one in a few days of why I chose the roster above. Thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing each person's version of the 2014 men's roster in the comments section below.
Nice roster, the only other players that might deserve a shot for me are Dan Girardi and Jeff Carter.
Good roster. Though they will want toews at center for sure. That third line is so beastly, but do you think they would put getzlaf with perry?
M Staal over Pietrangelo?
I dont think Fraud Giroux makes it, the D will take someone more stay at home to play with Letang then Soupcan. Dcore will be Keith-SeabrookDoughty-WeberLetang-APStaalI think Price, Fleury and Ward are the tendersForwards look likeStammer-Cros-IginlaTavares-Toews-E StaalNash-Getz-PerryBerg-M Richards-EberleJ Staal
Ya, AP is a lock for the team imo. Aexf-do you think iggy has enough in the tank? Especially with pitty probably making a deep playoff run. If he is having a strong season I guess. His leadership would be valuable.
I completely overlooked AP :), I agree that he is also a lock!
I think he does, its hard to gauge what Iggy had left in a hardened shortened season. One thing that cant be overlooked is how much Canada values people who have been to the show already and chemistry. Thats why I see a lot of former linemates at the Olympics back even if there may be someone who is slightly better left out. Thats why you see a Mike Richards come back, Seabrook, and Iginla
Ya thats true. I want him to be our captain then. The defense gets pretty strong I think then.Doughty-weberLetang-Pietangelokeith-seabrooksubban
id think to play hall bergeron eberle... hall and eberle already have great chemistry
Good list. play hall and eb together though, good chemistry.
I like Giroux alot dont get me wrong, but i think we need a bigger body on our top ling to give crosby and stamkos room to make the great plays that he can these days. Id recommend putting rick nash on the top line. Hes the kinda guy that can make space. hes the kinda can that will cause both defenders to get to him crosby to pick up the puck and dish it out to stamkos at the circle and make the huge goal.
