First blog, here goes nothing!
With the Flyers holding the 11th pick in this years draft, there are a lot of possible ways this thing could shake out. If no trades are made, and that is pretty doubtful, I see the top 12 picks going like this:
1. COL Jones
2. FLA MacKinnon
3. TB Drouin
4. NAS Barkov
5. CAR Monahan
6. CAL Lindholm
7. EDM Nurse
8. BUF Horvat (may be a reach, but I think he greatly upped his stock in the playoffs)
9. NJD Nichushkin
10. DAL Pulock
11. PHL Ristolainen
12. PHX Shinkaruk
Realistically, I don't see a lot of movement with the 1st 6 teams. Calgary would probably like to move up into Florida's spot, but unless they are willing to part with the 6th pick, the 1st they got from St. Louis and their 1st in '14, I don't see Florida making the deal. If they do however, than Calgary ends up with Mackinnon and Floriday would still most likely take Lindholm at #6.
The Flyers have a tendency to take forwards with their first round picks. I believe this is because they are in general a safer bet to succeed and the club feels that they have a good chance to land a defenseman in the 2nd or 3rd round. If the 1st 6 picks go the way I predict, I could then see Philly offering the 11th pick, their 3rd round pick #71 and a prospect like Nick Cousins to EDM to move up 4 spots. If they make that deal, I believe the Flyers would then select Nichushkin. A future 1st line of Nichushkin-Giroux-Voracek could be a great one.
If the Flyers move up and get Nichushkin, I then think picks 8-12 go like this:
8. BUF Horvat
9. NJD Nurse (Lou won't be able to pass up a chance to get a Scott Stevens type dman)
10. DAL Pulock
11. EDM Zadorov (Edmonton gets a guy who may end up being just as good as Nurse
and they add a 3rd and Cousins too)
12. PHX Shinkaruk
Anyhow that's just one mans guess, I eagerly await your comments!
Why do you think the Flyers would move up for a winger when defense is their immediate need?
Nice write up
Carolina isnt gonna take Monohan. Theyre likely targeting Ristolainen. I think Monohan falls to Calg.
yah just what the oilers need, another 5 foot midget weighing in at 120 pounds, great trade (cousins)
to pgs916: defense has been a need since Pronger went down, but last year they took Couturier. It just seems to be their m.o. FWIW the organization seems to like to acquire their forwards through the draft and their D through FA and/or trades.
to poisonhead: perhaps, but I would be very surprised to see Ristolainen go that high. If that is who Carolina really wants, they would be smart to trade down to somewhere between 8-12 where they will still most likely be able to get their man.
