Flyers dominate Red Wings, win 5-0
Before the game even started, most would have said it would not have ended well for the Philadelphia Flyers, even with the injures in Detroit. Steve Mason had other ideas and was superb for the Philadelphia Flyers, shutting out the Detroit Red Wings, leading the Flyers to a 5-0 win. Steve Mason made several highlight reel stops on the way to 33 saves and a Flyers victory. This was the 3rd straight road game that Detroit has been shutout in, the second time in franchise history, the last one being in 1928.
"These games are building blocks," Mason said. "It's a small step in the bigger picture."
Scott Hartnell had two goals and an assist, Claude Giroux gave a goal and two assists while Sean Couturier and Adam Hall also scored for the Flyers. Couturier had gone the last 9 games without a goal. This was Adam Halls second goal of the season. Mark Streit had 2 assists against Wings.
“We were able to control a couple of pucks. G and Kimmo were able to move the puck back and forth and there's lanes that were going to open up.” Hartnell Said “Kimmo made a great shot and I was able to get a stick on the puck and it went in.” Continued Hartnell.
Timonen left the game with a lower-body injury with 8:46 left in the second period and did not return. When asked about the injury, Coach Craig Berube said the injury was not serious.
In the second period, Detroit’s Luke Glendening, Kyle Quincy and Tomas Tatar all hit the post. Forward Riley Sheahan would have gotten the Red Wings on the board in the third, but his shot over the glove of Mason came after Grossman dislodged the net, stopping play. Grossman was whistled for delay of game. Detroit came into Tuesday night with the league’s top-ranked road power play, but failed to score on its four man-advantages.
Detroit netminder Jonas Gustavsson had 23 saves for Detroit in a losing effort. The Flyers win ended a four-game losing streak (0-3-1) and they have now won eight straight at home versus Detroit. Detroit has not won at home against the Flyers since the playoffs in 1997.
The Flyers might have picked up two points against the Detroit Red Wings, but the following road trip won’t be easy. The Flyers will play the Anaheim Ducks Thursday evening, who have only lost at home once [against a hot Winnipeg Jets team last week] all season.

The Flyers played very well tonight. The first game in about two weeks they played a full 60 minutes. Despite the very good effort Tuesday night, The Flyers will have to step it up a few notches before heading out west. There is no doubt Steve Mason is feeling pretty good about himself after night, and will likely get most of the starts out in California starting Thursday in Anaheim.
It seems that Coach Berube made the right call in putting Scott Hartnell with Giroux and Voracek, and demoting Raffl to the forth line. I don’t see a problem with this, as it seems like the Flyers will generate some scoring chances from all four lines, rather than just the first two or three.
