Mason, Flyers shutout Kings
Steve Mason made 35 saves & recorded his second shutout in his last three games as the Philadelphia Flyers blanked the Los Angeles Kings, 2-0.
"You've got to have a short-term memory," Steve Mason said. "People like to talk about negative things, and as players, you've just got to put it behind you and move on. "It was pretty much a 1-0 game the whole way, so there's not room for error. They have some big forwards up front and guys who can come to the net hard."
The game between the two clubs had a few milestones and storylines. Kings defenseman Robyn Regehr played in his 1,000th National Hockey League game. Wayne Simmonds scored his 18th goal of the season, (leads the team) in which it was also his 100th NHL career goal. 39 of his goals were with his former team, the Kings from 2008-2011. This was also the first time Jeff Carter and Brayden Schenn played against their former teams.
"I've been sitting on 99 for five games, so it felt good to get it," Simmonds said. "I got my first one here and my 100th in this building, so it was pretty nice. I've been playing with great line mates and I've been really determined this year."
Giroux sent a cross-ice pass to Vincent Lecavalier at the right circle. Lecavalier sent the puck over to Simmonds, who was present at the side of the net to open the scoring 7:48 into the second. Giroux tallied a power-play goal with 1:58 remaining, and that would be all she wrote for the scoring.
"It was a little bit difficult, obviously, not knowing anything else in the NHL," Simmonds said. "The Kings gave me an opportunity to play in this league, and I'm forever grateful for that. But once you get traded, it's a business and immediately you've got to try and forget about it.
"I gave my heart to the Kings, and now my heart's with the Flyers. I bleed orange now, and that's the way it's going to be. It was nice to see some familiar faces, but there are no friends when you lace up the skates."
The Flyers only put 13 shots on goal vs Kings today as it set a franchise record for fewest shots ever in a win and tied for fewest ever in a game.
Timonen missed the game with an injury to his left foot, suffered when he blocked a shot in Tuesday's 5-0 home victory over Detroit.
