I will begin with my opinion on the Leafs/Avs possible trade. Our dear friend, Mr. Eklund reports that the Colorado Avalanche might be asking too much in return for Hejduk. My opinion is that they are not asking enough! (Colaiacovo and Jay Harrison) Here are the players I would be asking to the Leafs if they really want him: Tomas Kaberle & Kyle Wellwood. Too much you would say? I don't think so.
Those who would say so only make their opinion on the way Hejduk has been playing for the last two years. Have you ever noticed that his poor play coincides with his long time setup man's departure: Peter Forsberg? If you watched closely the Avs play during their stretch run, you might have noticed that Hejduk has found a new setup man: Paul Stastny. So next year, things should be better.
Another factor to take into consideration is that Hejduk is still under contract until the end of the 09-10 season. At a salary cap number of 3.9 million, I consider it a hometown discount. If the Colorado management really wants to get rid of Hejduk, they have the obligation of getting something really good in return. Tomas Kaberle, at 29, is entering the prime of his career and as a great shot from the point. Kyle Wellwood, at 24, is still very young but is very promising for the future.
It is also important to consider that if Forsberg's longtime linemate is traded, Peter the Great might decide that there is no real interest in returning to Colorado. So if the Toronto Maple Leafs want to make a trade, let's make a good one. For both of us. Finally, we must not forget that Hejduk has a non-trade clause on his contract. He would have to waive it in order to complete any transaction. That would be surprising since he mentioned that he would love to end is career in Denver.
Lets not trade the duke. He's amazing with Stastny. But I do belive you are asking too much. Kaberle for Hedjuk straight up wouldn't be fair because Kaberle is their best defenseman. I'd want Coliaccovo or Wellwood with a higf pick, but its just not gonna happen.
