So I was bored and I came up with the "ideal" cap scenario for an NHL team. Assuming that the average GAA is about 2.5 and there are 82 games, a team would need to score 205 goals to be league average. I also assumed that the salary cap would be $70 million, I then assumed offense is worth 50% of the cap, defense is worth 40% and the goalies 10%.
FORWARDS
Line 1 can be expected to score 40% of the goals or about 82 per season. 27 a player.
Line 2 can be expected to score 30% of the goals or about 62 per season. 21 a player.
Line 3 can be expected to score 20% of the goals or about 41 per season. 14 a player.
Line 4 can be expected to score 10% of the goals or about 21 per season. 7 a player.
*Defense can be expected to score about 30 goals and I didn't factor that into the 205 as that isn't their primary job and anything they score can be counted as a bonus.
50% of 70,000,000 is 35,000,000 for the forwards.
Line 1 - 40% of 35,000,000 is 14,000,000 or 4,700,000 per player.
Line 2 - 30% of 35,000,000 is 10,000,000 or 3,300,000 per player.
Line 3 - 20% of 35,000,000 is 7,000,000 or 2,300,000 per player.
Line 4 - 10% of 35,000,000 is 3,500,000 or 1,600,000 per player.
DEFENSE
For the defense I went off of minutes played instead of scoring for their "value".
Pair 1 you can expect about 25 minutes or 42% of ice time.
Pair 2 you can expect about 20 minutes or 33% of ice time.
Pair 3 you can expect about 15 minutes or 25% of ice time.
40% of 35,000,000 is 28,000,000.
Pair 1 - 42% of 35,000,000 is 11,760,000 or 5,880,000 a player.
Pair 2 - 33% of 35,000,000 is 9,240,000 or 4,620,000 a player.
Pair 3 - 25% of 35,000,000 is 7,000,000 or 3,500,000 a player.
GOALIES
Nothing fancy here just a 60/40 split in games played.
10% of 70,000,000 is 7,000,000.
Goalie 1 - 60% of 7,000,000 is 4,200,000.
Goalie 2 - 40% of 7,000,000 is 2,800,000.
SUMMARY
To start it should be noted that the cap is fluid and changes from season to season so the math would be wrong from season to season. There are gems and bloated contracts and 100 other variables that throw a kink into this blueprint but if it could be followed it would allow for a very balanced and average team that could compete in the NHL.
Who wants to read about Math? If you throw in a couple sodomy jokes it might make it more interesting.
I think you bring enough sodomy for everybody.
