Okay, I get the fact that ESPN does not see Hockey as a number one sport or number four for that matter. However, when the passing away of a Legend, such as the late John Ferguson Senior, should there not be some form of respect shown here?
I think ESPN should be a shamed of themselves. There was not one mention on their Home page and his passing did not even enter into their listed headline stories. In fact even under the sub heading of NHL, he was still forgoten.
Will this ever change? Will Hockey ever get the publicity it deserves?
RIP Mr. Ferguson.

ESPN is a awful network. Why if people didnt keep bringing it up, I'd neve even know it existed. I dont watch ANY of their programming -- none of it.I dont think any true hockey fan should watch anything on ESPN, even if you do like other sports.
I could be wrong but I thought ESPN stood for entertainment , sports , programing , network which means entertainment comes before sports and real sports stories. They lost me with the 24 hour terrel owens watch as they forgot all about hockey
Yeah ESPN keeps going down further and further in my books. That is another classic example there. :/
I watch ESPN everyday, and it keeps on dissapointing me everyday. i know this sounds like an oximoron, but i need something to complain about the next day. as i am writing this the discussion of the Phillies losing 10,000 story came up, they the showed the biggest losers in all major sports, they showed the Blackhawks but the announcer never even said it. so to sum this up yes ESPN should be ashamed
ESPN is to sports what MTV is to music. All fluff and celeb crap and nothing of real value or quality. As a hockey fan living in the U.S. all I can say is thank God for the internet!

I agree that a sports network should have reported the passing of such a figure. However, Chiefdee, you must have not viewed ESPN recently if you think that they can feel shame. ESPN is all "Attitude, All the Time". Smart Ass on-air personnel and flashy graphics camouflage the stench of corrupt inside-dealing (cross-promos of Arena Football, Xtreme Sports and anything Disney) and over-produced highlights for ADD sufferers. ESPN dropped the NHL like a bad transmission and has never looked back. It is even difficult to find the remaining morsel of a hockey show they still produce....
If I'm not mistaken there were no hockey players / moments nominated in the ESPY's. ESPN is not made for the intelligent sports fan who wants game / player analysis or in depth coverage . As ginogold touched on, they market for the fan who is more interested in the off court (or ice, field, ect) drama and individual personalities and then sprinkle in a little actual sports coverage. If you want to make an ESPN reporter cry ask them to analyze a play. My comparison is that ESPN is to sports what the E! channel is to Hollywood. If the NHL wants attention from ESPN then Crosby better either date a pop star or go on stage and dance to MC Hammer's "You can't touch this".b4MV01 mentioned the the Phillies story. The thing that irked me was that they kept saying (dramatically) "biggest losers ever" while comparing them to sports that play way less games each season and teams that have not been around as long. They also failed to mention that they do not have the worst losing percentage. I'm barely a baseball fan and this was obvious drama up / facts down reporting.
Sidney won "Best NHL Player" but I didnt see any other NHL players nominated in a group award with different sports athletes.
i think it's rediculous how hockey is treated by espn, its such a great and awesome sports and probably involves more skill than any of the sports they talk about....it's bs how they never talk about it or mention it. Me and my friends are planning to write them a letter and make a petition to stop being so anti-hockey. We'll also be sure to mension john ferguson. Idc who you are, super big famous sports star or some shitty sports star who sucks but when any pro athlete dies they should be number 1 talk of the day before anything else.
Was Crosby at the ESPY's? When I saw a recap of the winners, they had footage of them holding the award and making a comment, but with Crosby they just showed a highlight?? I am sick of ESPN and all of their BS. Hell bring back Sports Channel America!!
I may be wrong, but maybe the issue with Hockey on ESPN is the athletes playing the game just aren't controversial enough and therefore deemed too boring? I know it's weak, but I can't think of another valid reason. I mean far be it to root for a sport where most of the guys are genuine down to earth people. Some of the other leagues should be so lucky!!
Crosby was also nominated in the breakthrough athlete category.

ESPN is dead to me. I cannot believe that TSN and ESPN look so similar in their graphics but the border between the US
...and Canada may as well be a 50 mile ravine the way they differ from one another.
I love Hockey, I have for the last 25 years really, or since I can remember. I am 33 now. I have never heard of John Ferguson SR, and again, unlike the vast majority of Americans, I LOVE hockey. My point is if I have never heard of Mr. Ferguson and I am a die hard, 99 out of 100 people wacthing ESPN would not have a clue who is either, that's why no mention I'm sure.
