After years of fighting for his life, his life has ended before our eyes. For what seems to be the first time that I can remember, the NHL has lost an all time great. Maybe the greatest player to have died has done so at the age of 88.
Gordie Howe's death comes out of the blue to many, but expectant and unsurprisingly to others. He has been in a battle for survival since suffering a stroke in 2014. For many, people were focused on the Stanley Cup Final, and how Pittsburgh could have defeated San Jose, which could have given Howe the final chance to see the Stanley Cup be lifted.
Gordie Howe is a legend, near the top of every category in stats for the NHL and the Detroit Red Wings. He played in Detroit for 25 years, 4 years with Houston Aeros, and a couple extra years with the New England/Hartford Whalers, and retired in 1980 and the age of 51.
Howe won 4 Stanley Cups with Detroit, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1972.
He also earned the first ever NHL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
Howe pioneered hockey as being a power forward and made it a family business by playing with both his kids in Hartford. He made sure his name will last forever in the Hockey World.
Rest in peace Mr Hockey.
